Issodun Crash 17 August 1918

Gents -

I'm attempting to find out the name of a pilot killed in a crash at Issodun on 17 August 1918.

I have the memoirs of 2/Lt. Philip Kissam, later 213th Aero Squadron and he details a crash he was involved in on 17 August 1918. He was not injured in the collission (during a takeoff roll), but the pilot in the other Nieuport was killed.

He does not mention the name of the other man, only the date.

Does anyone know of a comprehensive lost of the Issodun casualties that includes the date ?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated....
Mike

One Possibility

Gorrells contains a history fo the 3rd AIC, but the list of casualties is not complete. It does list Lt. John Lester Hubbard as Killed in accident on 17 August on Field 8.

Kissam mentioned he was solo in a Nieuport and crashed into another Nieuport so the field at least fits.

Hubbards bio is contained in New England Aviators, Vol. I, page 290 of the Schiffer reprint. It gives his date of death ast 18 August. The American Battle Monuments Commission gives the same date.

So this *might* be my man, but it's far from certain.

It has prompted me to compile a list of the 167 known casualties at Issodun, about 2/3 of which are commissioned officers - presumably pilots - and cadets. I'm sure a few of these were killed by the flu/pneumonia, but the large majority are trainign crash deaths.

So far, I have discovered about 80 of the homes towns of the offciers and cadets and dates of death for about 55 - not too bad since I started this this afternoon.....

Still interested if anyone knows if Hubbard was killed on 17 or 18 August since two official sources differ and if any other cadets/pilots were killed on 17 August 1918 at Issoudun.

Any help appreciated !
Mike

Bonjour

Seems to be 18 august 1918, Mike ,judging the inscription on his grave

Lieut John L. Hubbard ( - 1918) - Find A Grave Memorial

Here is a short biography about him
I have find here

http://www.archive.org/stream/2ndrep...vuoft_djvu.txt

3Iobn Lester it)u&&acD

John Lester Hubbard was born on November 9, 1895, at
New Rochelle, New York. lie prepared for college at Moses
Brown School, Providence. In college he was a person who
loved athletics of all kinds, but as is so often the ease his
physique was such he just missed the university major sport
teams. This, however, had no effect on his love for the game,
or his enthusiasm, as was shown by his faithful and splendid
work on a scrub Freshman football team. He later was on the
university gymnasium squad and on the university lacrosse
team.

Two points in his character endeared him to many friends :
A quiet dignified enthusiasm which never left him in any-
thing he undertook, and a delightful sense of humor flexible
enough to be often directed against himself.

When war broke out Hubbard went about military busi-
ness with great seriousness of purpose, but the naive point
of view that the whole thing was a thrilling amusing ex-
perience. The forces which drew many in college near to
him had the same effect in the army. His unusual ability
as an aviator commanded the respect of all his fellow officers,
but what was much more important to him, his great charm
made these same officers his friends.

He entered the first Officers' Training Camp at Plattsburg
in May, 1917, and in August transferred to the School of
Military Aeronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Tech-
nology as a private 1st class Aviation Signal Corps. He
graduated as an honor man and in October he sailed for
France to receive his final training. This training he re-
ceived at the French School of Military Aviation at Avord,
at the 2d Aviation Instruction Center, Tours, at the Aerial
Gunnery School, Cazaux, and at the 3d Aviation Instruction
Center, Issoudun. On May 13th, 191s, he was commissioned
First Lieutenant Air Service, Military Aeronautics, and was
attached to the 10th Aero Squadron. He died as the result
of an airplane accident on August 18, 1918, at Issoudun.

Thanks Bruno !

Thanks Bruno -

That's useful.

Kissam may have his dates wrong - could have been the 18th - but I'm still filling out the list of pilots (officers and cadets) who were killed at Issodun. Once that's complete and I have all the dates, hopefully I will have a match for the August 17th date.

From Kissam's (unpublished) memoirs -

I had come down from a half hour of air work and had taxiied up to the line to take off again for another half hour....When I got to the flag, I opened the engine, picked up flying speed and let her take off. I was moving probably at 60 miles per hour and about five feet above the ground when there was the most awful crash. I was thrown hard against the grass on my face and I felt my legs about to be crushed by the increasing pressure of some weight above me. I yanked out my legs and curled up on my side. My plane had somersaulted and landed on top of me. My engine was above and behind me and almost touching another engine.

After being extracted from the wrecked Nieuport, Kissam continued...

..we walked around to the other cockpit which was right side up. I worked with the mess, with the mechanic right behind me, until I saw him. He was crouched down in the seat and as we worked in nearer we both saw he had no head.

All sensations left me. I felt absolutely numb......But I walked back to the line, got another plane assigned to me and took off. This was the 17th of August, 1918.....When I had finsihed, I was really exhausted and it was only then that I began to feel the horror of being instrumental in the death of another pilot.

His logbook records he had three flights that day - a short 10 minute hop which ended in a forced landing on the field (he mentions that in his memoirs), 30 minutes of "simple air work" which matches his memoirs and a last one of 20 minutes - all which match his logbook.

The following day, he was qualified on the 18 meter Nieuport, so this incident was almost surely on the 17th.

For the interested, I will post the list of casualties and what I have found in the last few days of searching.
