Greetings,
I'm probably not giving you any new information, but here goes. I have read that Lufbery wanted to travel across the Pacific, but could not save enough money to pay for passage. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and managed to get posted to the Philippines.
Lufbery remained for over two years, his time in the army enabling him to become a U.S. citizen. Apparently he remained in the Philippines until his army enlistment expired. He then moved on to Japan, then China, then India. He met the French aviator Marc Pourpe, in Calcutta, in 1912. The rest they say, is history.
