JASTA 11 vs 3 Squadron RAF 20th APRIL 1918

I've read various accounts of the air fight between 'C' Flight of 3 Squadron RAF and Jasta 11 in which Von Richthofen scored his 79th and 80th Victories. Can anyone tell me the names of all the pilots involved in this combat or at least the the exact numbers involved. Also interested in the second flight of 3 Squadron that supposedly came into the fight after Raymond Barker and Lewis were brought down. I can't however find any accounts by members of this flight or by any German pilots of them joining the fight.

Lt Captain Bell seems to have claimed a Dr1 which in some accounts seems to be immediately before the above but in most others its 40/50mins before??

For the RFC I have, Captain Bell, Major Raymond-Barker, Lieut Lewis
For Jasta 11 I only have MvR and Lt Wolff

Thanks

Hello Jager1,

I don't know the exact numbers, but I found the names of these pilots (3 Squadron) who were involved:

- Captain C. M. Lemon MC (5446)
- Lieutenant L. A. Hamilton (D6519)
- Lieutenant C. M. Kinney (C1629)
- Second Lieutenant G. R. Riley (D6475)

Von Richthofen's Combat Report mentioned:

"With six planes of Jasta 11, I attacked large enemy squadron........."

One of the members of Jasta 11 in this fight was Leutnant Hans Weiss.

Regards,

Jos

Many thanks Jos

So that makes 7 of 3 Squadron so far, if these were all men in 'C' Flight including the Major as an extra, not sure I'd call that a large enemy squadron?? Presumably with MvR flying with the 6 from Jasta 11, that would make numbers even, well at least until the other flight arrived on the scene.

C Flight comprissed Capt DJ Bell, Lt LA Hamilton (USAS), Lt DG Lewis, Lt GR Riley & Lt SJ Squires. A Flight comprissed Capt CM Leman, Lt CM Kinney, Lt WH Boyd, Lt VH McElroy & Lt LH MacIntyre. Maj R Raymond Barker was tagging along with C Flight who turned to engage 5-6 Triplanes from larger formation of 15 Triplanes.

The Js 11 formation was likely MvR, Hans Weiss, J Wolff, Scholtz, Karjus and possibly Just.

Cheers Russ

Thanks Russ, that's a great help, didn't know the identity of the other flight and adds much to the roll of those involved.

I hadn't read anywhere that the Triplane's had been part of a bigger flight and that C flight had attacked them, thought it was visa versa, thats very interesting indeed.

Most of what I've read basically suggests that 2 flights of 3 Squadron left on a contact patrol, were split up in fog, C flight was jumped by a Jasta 11 aircraft and the other 3 Squadron arrived on the scene as combat was ending but its all very sketchy.

Many of the books I have mention or give a little detail of what happened but nothing gives a good picture, can you suggest any good accounts or references.

Thanks
