Jean Renoir: WWI Pilot and director of WWI classic film: The Grand Illusion

A great review of the WWI classic film "The Grand Illiusion" in the Wall Street Journal - which has been re-releaased. The review states the legendary French director, Jean Renoir, was reconnaissance pilot during WWI - I did not know that.

Here is a links to his fiche:

I have never seen this movie, but I think to buy the DVD, and I like the actor Jean GABIN (Was a very good French actor of my opinion).

When I look photographs of the movie, I find that uniforms were very credibles in this movie, and I understand why. It's important that uniforms were as the reality. Look here the second photograph: Les Visiteurs du Soir: La Grande Illusion de Jean Renoir

Greetings.

I have read that the uniform worn by Gabin in La Grande Illusion was Renoir's. It is one of the great films. Ransom

Yes, but I only recetly discovered that the aircrew were not the only ones involved in the war.....

The Grand Story

So, no, The Grand Illusion has no aircraft in it - but tells such a great story. On recent posts on the Aerodrome, it was said by others that "The Blue Max" is not a story about flying, but of class and conflict - and at its core a great story. The same thing could be said about "Wings" which was just re-released. It is great story telling which makes these films so superior to the recent "Flyboys" and "The Red Baron."

What I am hopeful, particularly with the coming of the 100th anniversary of all things WWI, for some great stories to be told in film and on TV. We are just starting to see the beginning of this with "War Horse," "Downton Abbey" and "Birdsong". I hope some of them will have airplanes, but only great stories are going to draw in a new audience to the subject of WWI.

I have been considering writing an article of OTF about the POW experience of American and French air crews. Does anyone think there is any interest in such an article?

Thanks for your consideration.
