FJP Geard was indeed one of the earliest fatalities in France. On the 18th he was flying with 2Lt RR Smith-Barry in 5 Squadron BE8 391 when it crashed and was wrecked near Peronne. He died of his injuries that day in hospital. Pilot Smith-Barry was injured. The latter was the man who founded the Gosport School and revolutionised pilot training in the RFC - so he was injured that day but not also killed - thank god - for all the lives his methods came to save.
Rest in Peace Cpl Geard.
