Al, you know that I have no axe to grind on Billy, but I gotta stand up for my hero.

Twenty-one victories in twenty-one days. Frank Luke Jr. was the airborne gunighter of Arizona and the best driver of the Great War!

The September Rampage! The only way he could have done it better would have been to do it in a U.S. Marine Corps uniform.

Semper Fi!!!!

Too many Coors and Bushmills 12yr Single Malt.

The Naval Correspondance Manual will never forgive my failure to use a spell-checker!

Greetings everyone! This is my first post *;D

Shooter, in regards to your post about Frank Luke, I totally agree with your respect for the man. I hold him in such high regard mostly because he was so human. Losing two wingmen (to his own recklesness? perhaps, but he was only human) certainly had an effect on his mental state, thus his rampage against German observation balloons, always a favorite target of his. And not without its glory; those things were quite heavily defended, so I have heard.

Anyway, I completely enjoy this site and its BBS. I'll be posting more and more from now on.

Regards,
John

Welcome to the fun, Knight!

Shooter, if I may be so bold... 18 victories in 17 days. But now we're splitting hairs.

As far as being the greatest driver of the war goes... that is certainly arguable. However, Harold Hartney saw all the great ones on the allied side - personally - and he agreed with you. Luke the standard by which every other pilot on the front was judged.

Don't want to impune those who fought much longer with far more victories for other nations... but no one fought with more courage or tenacity.

No one.

Stephen:

No argument, sir. You know how it is....think large....be large....I want to believe in FLJ as "larger than life" because the way he lived was larger than life.

I grew up regarding him as an icon, the way a Christian regards the True Cross as an icon. My whole life, I wanted to go down with a .45 in my hands and defiance in my heart. Ya gotta die of something...it beats dying of hemmoroids.

The details matter not at all in this case.

Semper Fi,

Shooter I'll be your wing man on this one. Even Rickenbacker said FL,J was the best. As to the numbers, who are ya gonna believe? A bunch of statisticians or the folks who were there. Nobody could smoke a sausage like Luke.

Regards,
Wayne
