In spite of denials, their is still 3rd party testimony that an attack did occur, in the region he was likely in. The problem is this. One of the people who gave that info, when it was reported by Dan McCaffrey in his book, " Billy Bishop: Canadian Hero," sort of retreated, but not completely. Apparently Dan McCaffrey didn't report that his witness said his information was 2nd or 3rd hand.

This was however clarified in David Bashow's Book, "Knights of the Air," in his chapter on Bishop. David Bashow also added an interview that Dan McCaffrey did with a WWI veteran from the German side, who sometime after the war, immigrated to Canada. And HE, also said Bishop did it.

But for various reasons, the collective nay-sayers dismiss these people as "old," with bad memories," or in the case of the Canadian immigrant, "playing up to the Canadian people."

Fine, don't be surprised if I put the same labels on those who attack Bishop's record, and add something like "jealous," "spiteful," and the ever popular "seeking revenge for slights, real or imagined."

[QUOTE=Billy_Bishop]Actually, it now appears that Bishop was indeed entitled to his 1914-15 Star.

Like they say, the truth will always prevail in the end!

Look on Brereton Greenhous' face:

And by the way, the late Erich Hartmann is the undisputed greatest Ace of Aces of all time. That would leave Boelcke and MvR in a paltry runner up position!

Al,

From your reading, can you tell us a bit more about the 3rd party testimony that an attack did occur, in the region that Bishop was likely in ? Who they were ? How many ? To whom did they make their testimony ?

I forget their names, and many of my books are still in boxes. As soon as I get them out, I can provide the names. However, two of the witnesses who claim to have been told by someone else (French farmers who lived in the area) were RFC/RAF officers who were told about the raid when their squadron occupied the former German airfield. This was said to be in or near Esnes and/or Estourmel, France. Just an FYI, both of these locations are relatively close to each other, which is why they tend to get suggested as the likely place that Bishop attacked.

The other person, of German origin claimed he had been told the story by fellow German airman shortly after the event. He also expressed a certain amount of disdain for German record keeping. So far as I know, all parties were interviewed by Dan McCaffrey.

As soon as I get my books out of storage, I can go into more details.
