The issue of Women flying in combat operations in WWI is an old one, in which I am getting more interested. Much of it is anecdotal, and some "history" is questionable. Marie Marvingt (France) has a pretty well documented history as a bomber pilot and she reportedly also flew observation missions on the Italian Front (which I haven't yet been able to document). Helene Dutrieu supposedly flew in the Paris Volunteer Air Guard, defending against Zepplins (don't think this is true, but wondering). Several Russians are well documented, including Sophie Dolgorukaya, Nadedja Degtereva, Eugenie Shakovskaya, Elena Samsonova, Ljuba Galantshikoff, etc. Supposedly, Mrs. A.S. Heinrich—American— flew an airplane during WWI in Italy for the Italian Government. Can anyone assist in providing any documentation for any of these combat-related activities? Any other women who you know flew military operations during the war? Thanks for the help.
