Hi I know that we have covered this topic before, but it has always been something that I have been curious to know more about. I know that Frankl is the most famous Jewish German fighter pilot of WW1 and that some people claim that Voss was also of jewish background.

My question is do we know of any other Jewish pilots flying perhaps with the Austrians or with the allies. There must be a least one with the Americans or amongst the South Africans ?

Any ideas ?

Solomon Clifford Joseph with Naval 10 and then 210 RAF - quite a distinguished career with 210, scoring 13 victories.

Anzac -

This is a subject that has arisen on a regular basis, and was discussed in some detail in an earlier thread.

Go to the archives (dead threads) for calendar year 2001, page 70, and open the thread "Jewish Aviators."

Then, if any unanswered questions remain, we can address them here.

I don't mean to be abrupt, but it's a lot of info, and already on record, to rehash.

Best regards,

Ira

Ira & Cigogne,

I interpret Anzac's question as relating to "other" Jewish pilots "flying with the Austrians or the Allies".

Apart from a fleeting mention of a French pilot, the thread you quote isn't going to help much.

Thanks Ira that is very handy. German Jewish participation in WW1 is something I have always been interested in. God knows with my background which side I would throw my lot in with in back in 14-18. Always thought that was a difficult "back to the future" like scenario to ponder.

Mind you I have read a lot about anti-German sentiment in Australia in 14-18 and it always annoys me and makes me think how that would colour my decision. Makes the achievements of Monash and the high regard amongst the allies for him even more amazing given that he was of German Jewish background.

My own Great Grandfather, Berthold was Jewish ( from Breslau, same as MVR) and he served with the German army medical corps in the Balkans. I new that he died in ww1 but it wasn't until a few years ago that I found out that malaria got him in Macedonia in 1918 .

I would love to visit his grave, but Macedonia is not the easiest or safest place to get to at the moment. I always thought I might get there after a Gallipolli trip but I would not know where to begin. Kind of glad that he was not on the Western front, as my mother's Grand father was in the AIF on the Western front and I know its a long shot but I always thought it would be odd if my Aussie forefather had killed his German counterpart. Anyone know about finding WW1 war graves in the Balkans ?

Bloody hell my spelling is getting really poor these days.

and I would without a doubt throw my lot in with the AIF. The diggers really knew how to kick butt.

Hi Anzac,
you should try and visit the website of the "Volksbund deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge". There is a search-engine for war graves, so possibly you have luck and find your grandfather. Click on the button "Gräbersuche". Sometimes the site has Server-problems but it should work...

http://www.volksbund.de/

The only german war grave in Macedonia I'm aware of is in Bitola with 2123 war graves from WW1. It is planed to build two new WW1-cemeteries in Prilep and in Lopatiza the next years.

I wish you good luck...

Regards, Immo

there is a french pilot that was jewish and an ace
Sous Lieutenant jacques Louis Ehrlich

he will start the war as an infantryman then join the aviation after a serious injury he will start scoring with spa154
He got 19 victories (1 less than Frankl) all but one balloon
He get most of his victories (about 15 out of 19) in colaboration (mainly with Coiffard)
he was born the 5h october 1893
he first spend a year with N124 before being wounded during a strafing mission, back to the squadron about one year latter
after at serious accident with Waddington (he rammed into his companion spad) he was send in leave for one month
on the 18 sep after a last balloon victory he was shoot down and spend the rest of the war as a POW

If we consider than Frankl had converted to catholism (to able to marry his loved one) Ehrlich is the higest practising jewish ace of ww1 (and maybe of all time)

there was quite a few jewish pilot in the french aviation (in fact the proportion of jewish pilot in the aviation was higher than in the general population)
for some reason most of them were serving in the observation unit (more because of a social background)
