Dear Friends,

I guess that everyone knows about von Richthofen's Red Dr1.
What other aircraft did he use before it, was there
anything special about them, like a personal mark like Nungesser's Black heart.

Sixty of MvR's victories were gained flying other than the DrI, almost all on various Albatros types. Many of these aircraft would have parts of the airframe painted red, sometimes a little sometimes a lot, which was the facing colour of the Kaiser Alexander III Uhlan Regiment.

1-17 in Albatros D111,I don't think so!
He shot Hawker down in a D11 and quite a few other early
victorys in Albatros D1 or D11

Gents

Thought I might have typed one too many Is after the D so have checked the entry in Above The Lines - for victories 1 and 2 "MvR flying Albatros DIII 491/16"; thereafter, up to victory number 17 either "MvR in 491/16" or "MvR flying 491/16".

Presumably the first entry is a typographical error and should read Albatros DII 491/16.

Baron

Between painting, putting up Xmas decorations and making sure we've plenty of spare light bulbs, I've been trying to see if I've got anything that shows when the DIII first got to the front and the only thing I've found is an oblique reference suggesting March 1917.

Perhaps someone like Dan-San can shed a bit of light on the subject?

Anyway, I'll remember next time to put my brain into gear before hitting the post button (but it was half-past midnight when I did it!)

Merry Christmas

Manfred's 15th victory was obtained on Albatros D.II 491/16 on Dec 17,1916. His 16th kill probally the same. His 17th kill, his first with Jasta 11 was obtained on Jan 23 1917 and he may have used D.III 1960/16 which arrived the previous day.
After his 18th victory was when his Albatros suffered a lower wing failure.

MvR was photographed with a D.II with the side mounted fuselage rads and wearing a white band around the nose while still with Jasta 2.

His earliest D.III had only a red fuselage band. It was photographed with Lothar who later flew it.

I have seen no photos of a "personal" Halberstadt and probally only bore factory finish.

Schaefer was once permited to fly MvR's red Albatros. He never asked again because of how badly it groaned ,rattled, and shook in flight. He was thoroughly frightened by the experience and considered himself lucky to land in one piece.
