Did I imagine this Rickenbacker incident?

I recall reading somewhere many years ago that on one mission, Rickenbacker came back with a bullet hole in his headrest and a crease in the side of his helmet. As I recall, his explanation for being alive was that he had gotten a cinder in his right eye some years before and he sighted his machine gun with the left eye thus moving his head to the right of center. I might be confused. It could be some other pilot's story but I remember it as Rickenbacker. I read a book about him in the fourth grade (35 years ago) and that is where the memory comes from. Can anyone verify this? If it happened, which plane was he flying at the time and which side of the elmet was creased?

In his 'ghost written' Auto-biography Fighting The Flying Circus is where I first heard this. I don't remember if there was a date associated with it.

I haven't read enough to find that particular anecdote but here is a resource (if it's new to anyone)

It's in his Autobio and if that is correct, so is your recollection.

If need be I can chase down the specific ref in the text.

He claims it happened.
