Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that few people know what Paul Winslow did in WWI (other than survive and fly with 56 Squadron), or why we should know about him. I certainly don't recall him amongst the cadre of famous Allied pilots, even if he did fly with some of them. So, if I don't know who he is, or what he had done, it would be rather difficult to write an essay on him. A short biographical sketch perhaps, but an essay?

BTW, my definition of essay is a short literary composition on a single subject, usually presenting the personal view of the author and, it is hoped, supported by rational arguements. It is hard to have a personal view of Winslow if one has never heard of him.

Perhaps Dan San would enlighten us on this gent?

Miles, I agree and confess my own ignorance.

So, how about filling us in a bit, Dan-San?

My Gallery
Gentlemen:
Paul S. Winslow was from Chicago, Illinois. his brother Alan F. Winslow served in the LFC and flew with the French. Alan later served in the 94th Aero Squadron as a 2cd Lieutenant.
Paul was one of the 212 members of the "WAR BIRDS", was originally scheduled to go to Italy for training. The group was redirected to be trained in England at Oxford for ground school at later sent Paul was sent to Ayr, Scotland to the School of Aerial Fighting. Was assigned to the Sopwith Camel training, crashed on his first flight, He said he did not like the "Camel" and requested to be sent over to the S.E.5 school. He said he "loved the S.E.5".
On completion of training was sent to 56 Squadron, S.E.5,RFC.
He was a member of the 56 Squadron Honor Guard at MvR's funeral.
He achieved one victory on 10 August 1918.
On completion of his tour with 56 Squadron he was assigned to AEF Air Staff.
During WW2 he was the C.O. at Miami AAF base as a Colonel.
you will find reference to him in "WAR BIRDS" by Elliot White Springs, Alex Revell's High in the Empty Blue, also there are a couple of articles in C&C US and in Over the Front.
Blue skies,
Dan-San
PS: I have picked a deserving person that I am going to give the tie to. I was trying to generate some interest in Paul.
