Gunnar,

I have a note that Offz.Stv. Werner Voss served in FFA 19 in at least Apr16 and May16. I also have the note that this is NOT THE Werner Voss. His service record appeared in the phamplet by Nowarra entitled something like "Germany's Teen-Aged ace", and he was in KG 4/Ks 20 during this time frame. Rick

Rick,

Actually, it was Walter Musciano who wrote "Lt. Werner Voss, Germany's Greatest Teenage Ace" (Hobby Helpers Publications, NY, 1962), with lots of photos from the Charles Donald collection.

So, were there TWO Werner Voss's ??

Greg

Thanks, Greg. *Next time I will have to pull the source before I quote it from memory. *Were there TWO Werner Voss's - hey, I THINK so. *Odd, eh. *Or else, he was temporarily in KG 4/Ks 19 (not FFA 19) before going to to KG 4/Ks 20 (a lateral move). *In any event, his service record supports neither of these suppositions, although I did spot an Offz.Stv. Werner Voss in FFA 19 in the dates mentioned, above. * *R.

*Strange and often frustrating business this research, eh what??

For me it only exists ONE WERNER VOSS..

It seems actually that there is a possibility that Musciano and Hylands have misinterpreted the German document...?

I would believe that he actually joined KG 4/19 on 10 March 1916 from FEA 7.
Kasta 19 was later transferred to KG 7 and possible Werner wanted to stay within KG 4 and went over to Kasta 20(perhaps on 11 May)....

This make any service within FFA 19 impossible...?...but who has the final answer..?

just some guesses
:-/

Regarding Germany's Teenage Ace by Musciano, the book contains a copy of Voss's actual "War Record" with English translation.

Comparing the English translation to the German writing, it does look like this:

16.Nov.14 - Enlisted at Replacement Eskadron Hussar Regt. II

30.Nov.14 - To Mobile (active) regiment.

20.May.15 - Back to replacement Eskadron.

26.July.15 - Declared unfit for Infantry & Calvary duty. To Crefeld.

01.Aug.15 - To FEA 7, Cologne.

01.Sept.15 - To pilot training school, Crefeld.

12.Feb.16 - To FEA 7, Cologne, I Company.

10.Mar.16 - To fighter squadron IV, Staffel 20.

28.Mar.16 - Staffel 20 with field combat.

21.Nov.16 - Per Kofl. I, Nr.II, a 77 to Jasta Boelcke permanently ordered.

20.May.17 - To Jasta 5 ordered.

This war record of Voss's is said to have belonged to Charles Donald. Didn't Donald pass away fairly recently? Anyone know where this doc is now?

I'll keep digging around...
