Hi,

I'm searching for info about Hauptmann von Devall, the CO of KagOHL 2. The "Nachrichtenblatt" states that his aircraft did not return from a bombing mission over Chalons on 24. Mar 1917. I wasn't able to find anything about his fate! He is not mentioned in the casualty lists... Was he shot down? Was he taken POW by the French ???

TIA, Immo

Immo,

the French Air Service War Chronology states:
"Adj Ortoli, a. N31, EA, XF, N Reims, V Armée, 6.

a. Ltn von Flotten & Hptm von Deval, KG 2, POWs."

Der Hauptmann war also Ortolis 6 Luftsieg.

Ah, thanks Rammjäger

I just realized that I looked in 1916 and wondered why I did not find him : Too much beer the last days because of the WM I think...

Vielen Dank übrigens noch für Deinen Tipp mit Freizeit-Landau. Die haben wirklich schnell geliefert!

Gruß, Immo

Hm, just another question concerning this guy. Apparently KagOHL 2 was one of the first successfull night bombing units. In february 1917 they caused great damage to the industrial region of Nancy in several night raids.

When took Hptm. von Devall command of this unit?

Immo,

KG 2 14Aug16 as C.O., from C.O. FEA 1. And, I have his name as Hptm. Job-Heinrich von Dewall. He was a pilot. In fact I have his complete service record, if you are interested. However, I never heard of Ltn. von Flotten, who must have been the observer?? Any details, Rammjaeger?? R.

Thank you very much Rick! A great help as always
And yes, I'm very interested in his sevice record...
The Lt. von Flotten is a mystery for me too. Such a name is not listed in the Army Ehrenliste and I never heard this name here in Germany before. Perhaps we have a misspelling here, done by the french interrogation team?
For example von Flothow is a very common name in Germany...but this is only speculation...

Immo,

I think you made a good speculation. I am also not aware of a family of nobility with the name von Flotten and
I think both names were simply misspelled in FASWC. I would tip on von Flotow (saw only this kind of spelling in actual telephone-CD) too. There are three von Flotow´s mentioned on the homepage of the Deutsches Adelsinstitut (1 Hauptmann, 2 Leutnants).

PS: Vorsicht Immo, solche scheinbar unerklärlichen Fehlleistungen können am Endspieltag wieder passieren!

Hi

It is also a little possibility that von Flottens real name could have been something like van Floten, which would indicate a Dutch(?) origin....?

Thanks Rick,
in the meantime I found his name in your CGAS. Made the same mistake as mentioned above... :

Gunnar,
yes that's another possibility. But in this cases there is also nothing to find in the Ehrenrangliste. Perhaps time for Mosen to jump in...

Hannes,
jau, ich bereite mich schon auf das Schlimmste vor -sowohl was das Ergebnis, als auch was meinen Alkoholpegel danach angeht

Der Ball ist rund...Prost,
