It might help if you could narrow down a bit the sort of information you're after.

For starters and general reading on the subject, try these:

Aviation Pioneers - An Anthology - extensive info on most of the influential early aviators, their machines and companies.

The Pioneer Aviation Group - there are links on this page to several sites dealing with (mostly American) pioneer-related topics.

European Aviation History 1900 - 1914 - including a fantastic article on the 1911 Round Britain Race, plus more.

There are plenty of sites dedicated to particular individuals and events. Let us know what you're looking for and we can probably point you in the right direction.

Eric

I am in Grad school and the assignment simply consisted of putting together a five page overview of the realm of aviation that existed in europe and the us before WWI. I am familiar with many things but I am looking for ideas on how to go about putting together a good outline to begin the paper.

Don't forget airships.
They are historically important and very closely tied to pre WWI HTA.
S-D No.14B/14bis for example. http://www.earlyaviator.com/archive/..._14bis_jpl.jpg

Goodnight Westley

Aha, a quote from the most watchable movie ever made (and with the best sword fight). 'Rush me and you get lousy miracles."

As for pre-WW1, buy a copy of Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines. Enjoy it, then write a critque of its accuracy. That should cover it

cheers, Boom

"The Early Birds" by Arch Whitehouse, 1965, 285 pages.

If your looking for the story in one place (a book) then this is a fairly good anthology. I'm not sure it's still in print but it makes for a good read and he covers it well.
