Russian Aviation Deaths Pre-WWI

My last inquiry regarding German Aviation Deaths pre WWI was so successful (Thanks to those forum experts who provided information), that I think I will try again.

Does anyone have available a list of those Russians who died in Heavier-than-Air Aviation prior to the outbreak of WWI? I am looking for Name of individual, crew status (Pilot or passenger), date of crash, and location of crash. If you have only some of that information, even that would be helpful in completeing my list.

I am trying to build up a complete list of all aviation-related deaths (both from flight and people killed on the ground by crashes or aircraft accidents).

Thanks for any assistance you may be able to offer. Doc

Hi Doc!

8th October 1910 : Hauptmann MAZIEWITSCH on Farman biplane during St Petersburg aviation week.
27th October 1910 :ITALIAN Genieleutnant SAGLIETTI, Sommer biplane crashed during military excercices (place not mentioned)

Source is a Arnsbert Vooreiter Jahrbuch...1911 printed!
There was also a 1912 edition which might have more info from October 1910 until October 1912 ?
John Duggan , UK has it , I know!

Once again, Jempie and Mattyboy, thanks for your assistance. That first URL you listed, Mattyboy, is a great one. I am glad you mentioned the "EarlyAviators.Com" site, as that is my list which I am trying to complete-- what is posted there is actually about three generations old, but I keep working on it.

Thanks again for the assistance. Doc

Hello Doc,
Not a problem. I know it sounds a bit morbid, but the pre-ww1 deaths of aviators also interests me.
Further to Jempies post - a bit more information about Matsievitch can be found here:

Russian Aviation Deaths Pre-WWI

Hello Doc, Jempie and Matty Boy, Like yourselves I've had a strong interest in both pre-war and wartime airmen losses. I was happy to see the subject raised, especially about the Russians. I'd like to add a number of corrections to spellings if I may. I should emphasise that all dates listed are by the new style (Gregorian) calendar which was 13 days ahead of the Russian old style (Julian) calendar.

07.10.1914 is correct date for deaths of Shtabs Kapitan Bronislav Vitoldovich Matievich-Matsievich and his brother Stanislav Vitoldovich.

28.03.1913 - Aleksandr Petrovich Perlovskiy
24.04.1913 - Vsevolod Mikhailovich Abramovich
24.04.1913 - Moisei ___. Dunets
31.05.1913 - Mikhail Georgievich Balabushka
29.07.1913 - Konstantin Konstantinovich Tsamaya
05.08.1913 - Georgiy Ivanovich Polikarpov
09.09.1913 - Evgeniy Dmitrievich Druzhinin
20.09.1913 - Georgiy Valerian Fisher
24.09.1913 - Ivan Vladimirovich Avinas
18.10.1913 - Karl Ivanovich Kleshchinskiy
06.12.1913 - Petr Petrovich Vaksmut
20.03.1914 - Dmitriy Georgievich Andreadi
16.04.1914 - Dmitriy Mikhailovich Vetchinkin
30.04.1914 - Georgiy Evgenevich Gartman with mechanic Kovalchuk
04.05.1914 - Mikhail Ivanovich Lyaschenko with passenger Savitskiy
09.05.1914 is incorrect date and not Hartmann - see Gartman above
15.05.1914 - Dmitriy Nikolaevich Semishkurov
21.05.1914 - mechanic A.A. Mukhin - pilot A.M. Gaber-Vlynskiy survived
??? 21.05.1914 - "Ubeiko" perished at Baku - ??? I am unable to identify
29.05.1914 - Vladimir Konstantinovich Kuzminskiy
19.06.1914 - Vsevolod Zakharovich Stoyakin
19.06.1914 - M. ___. Yankovskiy
20.06.1914 - E.A. Pavlov
22.06.1914 - V.A. Borislavskiy and V.V. Isachenko-Kosyura
30.06.1914 - Nikolai Pavlovich Boyarogolo
08.07.1914 - A.E. Shensin
13.07.1914 - Pavel Zakharevich Firsov and student Aleksandr ___. Gomberg
14.07.1914 - Vladimir Nikolaevich Esipov and mechanic ___.___. Kalmanovich

Details such as aircraft, locations and circumstances will appear in my Vol.2
Histroy of the Russian Military Air Fleet - Victories, Losses and Men who Received St. George awards.

When time permits I'll try to add Russian airmen losses 1907 - 1912.
I hope it will be useful for you. Cheers, August

August, thanks greatly. That fills in a few holes, and I especially appreciate your reminder about the Gregorian vs Julian Calendars-- that explains some of the date discrepancies I have found.

A couple specific questions--

I show an unnamed Mechanic with Albekrinoff 23 March 1912 at Sebastepol.
I show an unnamed Mechanic with Polikarpoff 5 Aug 1913 at Saint Petersburg.
I show a passenger whose pilot (Katchinsky) lived, 17 December 1912 at Sebastepol.
I find a passenger with pilot Gouchino, 24 September 1913, location unknown.
I find a mechanic dying with Klevchtinskim 18 Oct 1913 at Kaluga.
I have a passenger/mechanic with Vetchinkin, 22 Apr 1914 at Lidy.

Do you happen to have names I could put to any of those people?

I will wait with bated breath until you can post the earlier Russian facts.

Thanks for the loan of your expertise. Doc

Russian Airmen Deaths Pre-WWI

Hello Doc, Glad to help when I am able. Here is what I could find on your questions: Note: All dates are new style.
22.03.1912 - Podporuchik Vladimir Aleksandrovich Albokrinov (naval pilot) and mechanic Aleksandr ___. Sonin - Farman IV at aviation school at Kacha near Sevastopol. Please note correct date is the 22nd.
05.08.1913 - Poruchik Georgiy Polikarpov (pilot) of 18th KAO with mechanic ___.___. Dernov - Sikrosky type at Krasnoe Selo, near St. Petersburg.
14.12.1912 (not 17 December) - Pilot MIchman V.R. Kachinskiy survived, but mechanic Unterofitser N.___. Streltsov was killed - Voisin-Canard nr.12 (factory nr.720) in Severnay Bukhta (northern bay) near Sevastopol.
Your 24.09.1913 - I have not record of a loss on that date and have no record of a pilot named "Gouchino." I would strongly question this. Source???
18.10.1913 - Poruchik Karl Ivanovich Kleshchinskiy (pilot of 12th KAO and mechanic Efreitor (private) ___.___. Antonyuk - Nieuport IV at Tikhova Pustyn, 15 km N Kaluga.
16.04.1914 (not 22nd April) - Podporuchik Dmitriy Mikhailovich Vetchinkin (pilot) and mechanic Starshiy unterofitser ___.___. Kovalchuk - Nieuport IV at Lida.

Might as well finish off the 1907 - 1912 losses for you.
19.07.1907 - Military aeronauts (balloon) Poruchiks L.G. Safonov and M.G. Kologrivov, and Podporuchiks F.F. Likhutin and B.I. Mikahilov perished on balloon flight off Sveaborg Fortress by Gelsingfors (Helsinki) in Gulf of Finland.
18.06.1909 - Count F.F. Palitsyn perished in balloon accident near St. Petersburg.
07.10.1912 - Naval Kapitan Lev Makarovich Matsievich - Farman IV nr.20 at St. Petersburg.
02.01.1911 - Podporuchik B.L. Rudnev - Bleriot near Kovno.
27.05.1911 - Russian pilot Vladimir Schmidt - R-BVZ-built Sommer at St. Petersburg.
25.07.1911 - K.N. Shimanskiy - Farman at Mosskovskaya Slavyanka on flight from St. Petersburg to Moscow. flight instructor V.V. Slyusarenko badly injured.
31.01.1912 - G.G. Terevko killed in crash of his own glider at Tiflis in the Caucasus.
08.02.1912 - Shtabs Kapitan F.F. Leon (student pilot) and instructor Shtabs Kapitan V.N. Yanish - Farman IV at Sevastopol.
15.07.1912 - Poruchik A.V. Zakutskiy (student pilot) - Bleriot at Kacha near Sevastopol.
20.08.1912 - Poruchik Andrei ___. Kusakov (aeronaut) drowned when he fell from a balloon near Sevastopol. Two others were saved.
17.09.1912 - Poruchik P.N. Malinnikov, pilot of Novogeorgievsk Fortress AO - Bleriot at Novogeorgievsk.
30.10.1912 - Russian pilot N.Ye. Popov shot down by Turkish ground fire at Adrianople. He flew as volunteer for Bulgarians.

I do my best to record not only pilot and observer and mechanic losses but also the fellows who went up in balloons, who should not be forgotten. This covers the Russians before the outbreak of WW I. Perhaps you could share your findings, especially those from eastern Europe and Balkans. Cheers, August
