hallo!

Russia :

During the year 1890 there was also a big manoeuvre held to which the Russian emperor (as usual,) attended it!
It's than they used for the first time into the Russian Army an observation balloon it seems!
An illustration I own (no real photo, but "gravure" made on ,starting from a photo) was published into a French publication from it!
Can only scan it Thursday...

Saw a bit to late this goes about FRANCE!

I have home a book "Les Aérostiers Français" by G. Bethuys, from 1892...
Alos therein only "gravures"..but tells the history of the French military aérostiers ...
It's so that in those early years of military aérostation , most countries ordered their balloons and equipment ,in France!(Italie, China, Russia, Belgium,...)

YavorD,
Marvelous photos here and in your other two posts. Thanks for the link.
I notice in this thread a Russian of obviously high rank ascending in the balloon with a French officer, any idea as to the identity of either?
Thanks again.

Hi retread!
Forgive me for this late answer. Caption reads:
Quote:
Генерал Драгомиров и лейтенант Левек в корзине воздушного шара перед запуском.
General Dragomirov and Lieutenant Leveque (?) within the car before ascent.
My spelling of french officer's name is questionable.
Regards,
Yavor

Just one note- today we have a English as an International language but until WW2 that was french. That was also called "language of culture". officers regularrty learn that language but also many documents was in French or bilingual.

Your comment is right to the point, Sreiko!
In this particular case, I believe, visiting russian dignitaries were presented with this photo album on french soil.

Yavor
