Breguet's pre-1914 ID challenge #028

Breguet's pre-1914 ID challenge #028

Another machine for your consideration. For the real boffins , the machine to be identified is standing in the foreground. The identification of the machine - about which one can read somewhere that no pictures were uncovered - will bring one point. 0.5 point is an extra bonus when the location and the year is given.

Have a good time

Cheers

Kees

Our scoreboard at the start of challenge #28:

5.40 Varese2002 ==> 12 hour wait

4.80 Rbailey =====> immediate answer
4.20 richard B
3.20 Aquilius
3.00 Airarticles
2.30 matte_kudasai
2.00 Cruze
1.00 joegertler
1.00 paolomiana
0.60 aerohydro
0.50 Rod_Filan
0.40 Wind In The Wires

The rules:

•The thread title must be "Bréguet's pre-1914 ID challenge #......"
•The score board, link and rules must be copied to the beginning and end of each thread so that we know where we are.
•The flying object must have been dreamt up before 1914 (no limit backwards in time ....)
•There are no limits to the flying object for the pre-1914 series. There is no ruling that it must be flown, or completely built
•Machines which exist only as 'paper', that is absolutely no material has been cut to construct it, are excluded from this ID Challenge
•The picture / drawing must show as much of the flying object as possible, but views showing the machine 'incomplete' are possible (with discretion)
•Challenges which depict a machine already earlier presented are disqualified
•If there is any doubt as to the eligibility of a flying object for the challenge details should be PM'd to Breguet BEFORE the object is submitted.
•Once someone has got 5 correct answers under their belt they belong to the ROYALTY. Once they belong to the ROYALTY they must wait 12hrs after the posting of the new challenge before they can post an answer.
•To be eligible for correct ID an answer must include at least one characteristic of the aircraft that helped in its identification.
•The first person to ID the challenge correctly gets to post the next challenge. If this can not be done for any reason Breguet himself will post the next challenge.
•If a ROYALTY gives the correct answer too early, the challenge is over, he gets no point but has to post the next one. In lieu of the fact that the "novices" have in effect been "cheated" of their "exclusive" time that next post should be a relatively easy one. Anyone repeating the correct answer at the right time gets neither a point nor the right to post the next challenge.
•The final arbitor in relation to questions about the rules will be Breguet

It is very quiet here.

This is a quote from a text of the designer of this machine

Quote:
......flying machine of the so-called "heavier-than-air" type, and in general has for its object to provide a machine of novel design whereby it can be constructed with sufficient strength and solidity to resist the disturbing and destructive effects of ordinary winds and also withstand, with the exercise of reasonable care and skill on the part of the operator, the impact of the landing; to provide a machine which shall be capable of flight at both a higher and lower speed than has heretofore been practicable with machines of the aeroplane type; to provide for the safety of the operator and the machine in case of accident to the driving mechanism while in flight; to improve the steering and controlling mechanism by the elimination of certain defects which have heretofore been a source of danger in the operation of the machine; to provide a machine which shall be capable of travelling on land with an efficiency comparable to that developed in flight; to reduce to a minimum the danger of the machine being over-turned while in the air by the action of ordinary winds; and, in general, to improve the construction of machines of the type referred to, whereby they may be made stronger, and have minimum weight and air-resistence.
Sounds excellent - novel design - sufficient strength - landing impact - lower and higher speeds - safety - steering / controlling - travelling on land and in the air - minimizing danger - minimum weight - minimum air resistance

Cheers

Kees

I could not resist bringing in these drawings, which approximate the actual machine on the picture. They are beauties which have laid in the dark since ......... ?

Hi Kees,

the more material you show, the more I'm persuaded this is a F. Herbert's Dune Ornithopter......

cheers

Hi Paolo, brilliant idea but the Dune ornithopters look way too modern

The machine in this Challenge was no ornithopter, being engine or beter engines driven.

Cheers

Kees

It looks a lot like a Vuia to me, perhaps the elusive #III, of which I can't find a photo....

Characteristics of all Vuia machines-- 4 small wheels, pilot sits nearly at ground level, "auto-type" steering wheel, Very tall skeletal framework body, leaf-or-seedpod shaped tail. Doc

if awkwardness is a hallmark...

...of vuia designs, then i think you are onto something!
i cannot locate a pic of no.3. the earlier models have bigger wheels and
don't stand quite so high...
