Don't ask me how I got there. But in this short notes about Chantraine it is stated he died August 2 1936.

In 1910 he should have received the first french pilot brevet that was issued this year.

Geez Kees, you're slipping.

That's two mistakes in one Challenge.

You better take some time off to rest up. Starting Monday

Hmm.... I checked my reference and it gives

Quote:
Chantraine décèdera à Kortenberg le 8 juin 1910.
Source: Brackx, Daniel. Bruxelles: Editions Racine. ISBN 2873862939.

Personally I am under the impression that the data in this book is (far) more precise than an anonymous Wikepedia article, without any references to sources.

By the way Daniel Brackx is a member of the Forum Aerodrome under a pseudo, perhaps he can give more information.

Have a good day

Hmm.... Looks like Kees is right after all.

From the article where I originally found the Chantraine Aéromobile:

Joseph Chantraine was born in Namur in 1870, and he died in 1910, barely 40 years old.

Quote:
Hij werd geboren te Namen in 1870.

[...]

In 1910 stierf Joseph Chantraine, amper 40 jaar oud.

[...]

I wasn't arguing. Just wondered about the dates given.

After all I too believe 1910 is correct. This year appears on the most websites and then mainly of belgian origin.

But again I found another year when Joseph Chantraine died.

Quote:

If I get it right, Chantraine not in best health condition ceased to hear the swans sing on 8 June 1908.

June 8th is stated before and 1908 might be a typo.

I have checked the saying "to hear a swan sing" means to suffer from something.
It should go back to a legend about Martin Luther and Johannes Hus, a czech reformer who was condemned to death in 1415. He told "Today you are frying a goose but in 100 years there will be a swan that you won't fry."
(Hus in chzech means goose)
Martin Luther who was active 100 years later is alleged to have said: "If Johannes Hus promised my arrival then, as God will, you have to endure myself."

Maybe you did know. I did not until now.

Cheers

That's what I like so much about the Challenges, especially Pre-1914. I'm always learning something new.

I don't know if that's a famous quote but I'm sure somebody said it before me.

A two-page biography on Tollet and Chantraine (in that order) was published in the Brussels Air Museum Magazine No. 11-12. The index can be seen here.

Édouard Tollet was 18 years old when he flew the machine designed by Joseph Chantraine in 1908. Tollet (luckily) lived on and fought in WW1 as a pilot. He became a big name in Belgian military aviation during the interbellum and he left the military air service in 1946.

Special in the BAMM magazine is that you can start at one side of the magazine in Dutch (Flemish) and at the other side in French. Texts of the articles are the same, but illustrations are sometimes different.

Have a good week

Kees
