I also thought up a device that would lose the need to use wheel chocks (for ultralights). Its basically two thin metal plates (1 ft long 3 in. wide) that leaves enough opening for the front of the wheel.Between the metal plates are angled metal to "lock" the wheels of forward movement. When ready to taxi, there would be a slide (just like a drawer) and lever it forward and your ready to go!

So is it a good device?

BTW,I call it a wheel brace device.

EDIT: I just noticed! When I looked at a larger version of the pic I noticed that the controls is a bicycle handle,SWEEET!! Anyone know how it worked?

Original pictures of the Ellehammer 1906 flying machine can be seen on this Danish site here, together with a host of pictures of other machines and inventions. Ellehammer was a really great inventor.

Cheers

Thanks for the link Varese!Facinating photos! What modern light weight engine would be decent for such aircraft?

I have devised another device for such an aircraft! If theres no throttle, two curved "fans" (about 4 ft long) connected to a rod with a handle. The rod would be about 7ft long and connected to a joint that allows it to rotate back and forward. When the fans are at a 90 degree angle, the air flow will rotate (much like the recycling symbol) thus forcing it back while reducing throttle. If the aircraft is light enough, one might perform what I call the "bird landing" because birds twist their wings in that manner in order to have a soft landing.Just another idea of mine as my contribution to aviation

The engine in this first 1906 model of Ellehammer was just 9 (nine !) hp. His first flight with this machine was made on September 12, 1906, where he flew for 42 meter.

As you asked for a suitable engine equivalent to the contemporary 9 hp engine (probably a modified motorcycle engine, but I have not checked that). Being not an expert on todays (or yesterdays) engines, I was surprised that even ultralight engines already did 35 till 50 hp

A fine one - but probably excessively expensive - and surely too heavy is a late age rotary engine, which can be found here.

Perhaps you can use a modified lawnmower engine, which also develop almost 10 hp.

Sure there are more engine knowledgeable people on the Forum.

Have a good time

Kees
