Frank Luke Childhood
Of all the books I have read, I have yet to find one that describes Frank Luke's childhood. Can anyone help?

visit the 27th pursuit squadron site at: www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/7133/. in the second paragraph, click on '2nd lt. frank luke jr'. the whole site is dedicated to luke and the "link" is of his childhood.

Not yet---but I'm working on it.
The Phoenix Republican, the city newspaper of those days, tells some good facts about his time in high school (I've read every issue from 1915 to 1918). Some good stuff; it tells about a kid who was stubborn enough to stand up to the coach at a time when he was captain of the team, and lose his position in order to do what he felt was right, in spite of what the coach ordered. Of course, I don't know but what maybe the coach was right--I'm just pointing out that even then he was a stubborn willful kid. John |
Why do want to know about his childhood specifically?

He was no doubt a mean little boy who like to pop the other kid's balloons.

Despite what our aviation history enthusiast/cheerleader (Jeni)thinks, Frank Luke was a very active and adventurous child. He STUCK UP for others! His best pal: Bill Elder, was slightly handicapped but Luke took him under his wing from the time they were barefoot boys in the sun to the day Luke left Arizona never to return. Frank was well known and well liked within the community, he was known for putting on publicity stunts to promote athletic contests and school plays. Once, before a big football game, he attempted to jump off of the auditorium which a homemade parachute. The authorities got word of it and would only allow him to toss a "dummy" off the roof and drift to the ground.
