all inside parts are from mercedes, but this is for the 160mm drum. I use the 160 for the D7 2 seater. you can have a smaller one like 140mm. we put the cable inside the streamline tube, so you can not see any brake

Franzkait, thank you for posting the photo os the braking system as well. I would love to explore this option, can you email me some pricing for the hubs and brake system, or tell me the specs of the brake system and I can order it?

Bending tubing

Hello all,
I would like to ask again about the discussion back on page 85, about heating the tube before bending it.

I just read in Brimm & Boggess Aircraft Maintenance book, copyright 1940, pg 217. Their description reads:

"... drive a tight fitting wooden plug into one end of the tube, which should be sufficiently long to extend far enough beyond the form to hold it satisfactorily. Then fill the tube with sifted sand, rapping it sharply with a block of wood as the sand is being poured in so that there will be no empty spaces left. When the sand has filled the tube and been well packed down, the open end should be plugged and the tube heated with a torch. If the material is steel, bring it to a bright red. If aluminum or duralumin is being bent, it should be heated until it will char paper."

I know this is an old book, but it is how they made planes during the period we are building.

Are there any other references available that state otherwise? As a beginner builder, I need all the references I can get.

I am in the middle of making this jig right now, I’m pretty much following the way Achim made his on pg 96 post #954 on his thread. The one I’m making is 2 ¼ wide because I’m not putting brakes on mine so it a little different. I will post pics as it progresses.

if you need it for only 1 or 2 aircraft, you can make a easy tool like this one

Wire ferrules

Thanks for the post Franzkait, that looks similar to mine ... now I just need a Hydraulic press to try it out!!!

Is anyone Interested in going halves on wire ferrules with me? I contacted a spring company to make ferrules for me. They quoted me bundles of 100 per size. 50 per is more than enough to plumb a frame and wings I would think.
anyway the quote was:

1) $9.56 per ferrule with .063" wire (x 100)

2) $9.61 per ferrule with .080" wire (x 100)

3) $9.59 per ferrule with .071" wire (x 100)

anyone interested, give me a shout.

I tried making the parts with the jig you posted. Every time I press the parts, the metal tears along the curved edge. I tried using heat & cold pressing. neither works. I am currently using 4130 Crome Alloy. I will try a milder steel to see if that makes a difference.
