Edward or whomever has an actual DR-1 to work from, what measurement do you show for this area?
Thanks!
Jim

Jim,
GWP is away towing gliders this weekend and our Dr1s are at their first airshow of the year. Not back until Sunday but will get you the clearance then.
Regards,
John

Touch & Go from Hangar 1 in Connecticut
Ed and I worked more on our planes this past weekend- mine, that is.
We added some rounded corner tubing to the cockpit opening's corners, and then focused on the lower front tubing and welded on the cowl ring. Came out pretty good! Then we fit the lower wing to the fuselage and welded the collars with spar mounting tubes in place. All wings are made, so soon we will fit the middle wing on. As you can see in the landing gear closeup photo, the angled inside ribs on the bottom wing fit nicely in line with the landing gear angle- with a little room to spare.
Ron Sands Jr. has a finished fuselage his father made, for sale. Also, there is a set of spars, landing gear struts (I believe) and 2 sets of cabanes. If anyone is interested, please contact Ron directly or I can put you in touch.
Also, there were a few more P-51 fuel gauges...

Jim,
your Triplane is coming along nicely. Your photos are improving as well!
Did the dimensions shown for the positions of the angled inner rib on the lower wing to miss the rear undercarriage leg work out correct or did you need to adjust? Looking at the drawings and making some rough measurements I have my doubts about the positions shown.

Pete,
My placement of the inner ribs on the lower wings is indeed a mod from the plans. In the plans, you have some canting but it would leave a larger gap between the rib and and the fuselage. In consulting with others who know a lot more than me, I altered the measurements for a better, closer fit. I believe a few pages back, I showed the build up of the ribs- they do look a bit odd, I have to admit.
I also modified the inner ribs for the middle wing, the canting and the trailing/knife edge, rather than balsa block, being the main mods. But it looks letter and more authentic. If you need any photos of close ups, let me know. I will try and see where I wrote down the mods (inches) for the inner ribs, but I may have to actually measure them with a ruler to be accurate for you. The cant of the inner rib front webs of the lower wing matches the landing gear angle, and can be determined from the plans.
I hope I haven't made this more confusing for you Pete. Let me know what else you need from me.
How is your project coming along?
Jim

Thanks Jim.
The dimensions for the canting of the lower wing inner ribs seem to leave the rib front too close or even contact the undercarriage leg when I did a check, although without the landing gear actually in place. I think Ill have to check again with everything assembled, before glueing those inner ribs.

Pete,
That's right- the way the plans have the ribs configured, they will bump into the landing gear when removing the wing, or trying to put it on. With the modifications on Ed's and my ribs, you can easily remove and add the lower wing while the fuselage is on the gear- no problem!
Let me know what you need for measurements and I'll post them.
Jim
