Andy,
Even though we haven't seen much from you lately, everytime you post a picture of your work, I love the quality I see in it. Keep going!
Ed and I will regroup this weekend and Monday, after a few weeks hiatus. We want to bring his aircraft up to where mine now is- on completed landing gear, cowl ring, etc. Sounds like Ed is definitely wanting to bring his plane to Dayton this year, even if it means bringing it in a truck, and so it looks like I'll be coming also- unless I find a new job by then and can't come for that reason. I am looking forward to it, and to hopefully seeing Fred Murrin there, as well as many who I know by name here and phone calls only.
We'll have some photos for everyone from our weekend work.
Dogtail2, you receive your Rotec yet? Rex, can you send some photos of your recent work you wrote me about? I am still waiting for our French friends to send some photos too- even of the workshop "getting ready" would be good.
Have a great weekend everyone! Meet you back here soon.
Jim

philippe,
all of us here are excited to see your progress. what will you begin with? i imagine many people first begin with making the ribs for the wings, though perhaps one or two began with the fuselage.
good luck with the Stampe too!

philippe,
it is a perfect plan that there are 2 of you- one for wood and one for metal. this is exactly how my friend Ed ("Fritz Kempf", here on the aerodrome forum) and i have worked together.
the metal tubing list you have looks like a good start. to be honest, Wicks' list on their website for the Sands Dr-1 is not complete, but nearly so! there will definitely be some small pieces of metal that are not in the list, so if you have any local (France) sources for 4130 steel, it might be good to find out who they are now. Also, I remember one of the line items for tubing length was simply wrong- too short I believe. I would suggest that before you order from the tubing list, compare the tubing thickness and lengths with what the plans show- do the math, just to be sure that you do not come up short.
OH! I remember also, there is a miscalculation in the Wicks list for some of the spruce for spars. Like for the steel, add up the lengths, allow for some waste and double check before you order!
Good luck and we look forward to helping you- even from way over here.
Jim

Rons' DR1
Hello Philippe,
Nice to know your Stampe will go in the air before the end of year. I wish I could come and see all the treasures you own. Before the DGAC does its best to make all the old airplanes stay on the ground. This is Europe!
Our american friends must know the french governement wanted to prohibit all the old war airplanes because of terrorism. Maybe they thought it 's easier to buy and fix a Spitfire to attack people than buying a gaz tank and put the fire with gazoline... Look at the Ferté Alais meeting: about 200 gendarmes around (explenation for our american friends:gendarmes are military policemen). Every year it can be the last meeting.
It's very good right now to buy in USA all the stuff because dollar is very low. I'm sad I don't have all the monney right now so I could do like you.
Do you buy the "contreplaqué" also in USA? Will you use GL1 or GL2?
I was told that pine couldbe used instead of spruce for the spars, what do you think about it?
Well, many questions...
Sincerely greetings.
Thierry.
Ps: Jim, Can you tell me please about the wheels. Will you do it as Ron said?
Nice day.

While I am not currently working on a Dr.1, I note that in a 1977 issue of World War 1 Aero, there are 59 Dr.1s listed as under construction or flying. Where the heck did they all go?
BTW, I noted that at the time (my earliest copy is #66) Ron Sands had a monthly column speaking to construction challenges. Were these ever compiled and made available to current constructers?
Interesting fact: Ron did not recommend building spars on a sheet of ply placed on top of a card table. Apparently someone tried.
Regards,
John

Thierry,
Wheels- I had mine made by Rick Bennett. If you want, I will put you touch with him, regarding making wheels for you- they are of excellent quality.

My electric drill scarfer
Dogtail2,
Thanks for posting that picture. I have been trying to figure a good and simple way to make all the scarf joints I am going to have to do for my Alb. project. Your solution is so simple in hurts!
Phil
