Sounds like a deal Paul. Hope you move it soon into some appreciative hands!

Spring Thaw
Hi ,
It's springtime and it's time to get back to work on those DR-1's. Let's not run out of steam. Some of you guys can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
We're all waiting to see the progress photo's and an update on where everyone is.
That's an idea. Everyone who's working on a DR1 it's time for a progress report.

I know, I know....
You are right- thawing out up in cold Connecticut. Move over Daffodils!
Ed and I got together last week and will again this week. I just primered his horiz stab and this weekend I hope to finish the wire bracing/turnbuckling of my fuselage and the installation of the bungees on my Landing Gear. Honest truth, we keep forgetting our cameras- I will make every effort to remember mine this time! Witty narrative just doesn't cut it...
After the bungees, I will be ready to install the sturdy wire bracing on the LG and also finish up with the subwing construction- everything is cut and ready. I hope to then twist Ed's welding arm to weld up my cabanes- they too are pretty much ready to weld up.
More as it develops- thanks for the nudge Corvus!

Dr.I Sands Plans
Jim:
For those of us who have been watching your progress, but not from the first post, can you estimate how many modifications folks have discussed and reached consensus on, since you started with "original" Sands plans?
Does anyone keep a list of Dr.I "mods" for future builders who start with Sands plans, but wish to benefit from the collective experience here?
Thanks.

Hi Pete,
The only mods I am aware of people discussing are ones which might bring some of the design features back toward the original- things that might make installing the lower wing easier while the fuselage is on the gear, the middle wing's inboard trailing edge (the scalloped portions), hinged inspection doors vs round inspection plates, aileron horn placement, streamlined interplane struts, tailskid design, wheel and tire design, etc. Small things for the most part- depending on how critical the mods could be, some people may feel more or less open about sharing them in detail. They may best be approached by PM.

WOW! ... she looks fantastic.
Finally a builder that did the mid-wing cut-out correctly!
Thanks for sharing .... looking forward to seeing more too.

Thanks WF2.
The center cut out is not 100% original, as I have kept the reinforcing ply plate to give the trailing edge bow better strength, but this will look as per original Dr1 once covered.

I agree with WF2, the center cutout is pretty important aesthetically...right up there with the cowling.
Magnificent aeroplane!

I'm kinda liking the bracing wire! I see you haven't safetied wired the turnbuckles yet. Have you completed the final tuning of the frame? Also, what method are you gonna use for the bracing cable on the landing gear?
The five tuck navy splice, or the German version? I have tried both, and I think the German version was easier.
