Very sad news, but the stall-spin scenario is not an accident that is specific to the Triplane. It can happen to anybody in any airplane. This is one of the simple facts of flying that renews my faith in this machine and allows me to continue flying it.

Aircraft accidents

As most here know, the one thing we can say for sure this soon after this or any accident is that we really do not have any real idea what happened. I hope if there are any lessons learned that could help the rest of us, we will hear.
Now is the time to remember our good friend. Clear skies and fair winds, sir.

Just a remark: It's definitely not a spin, so let's wait for more official news:

Sorry, it's in French.

Any chance you could provide a short summary of what they are saying?

the aviation autority of the airfield says on the repport

"as a pilot and aeronautics professional, it's not a spin or a stall, the pilot had lost control of his plane for unknown reasons, an investigation is underway"

sorry if it's not a perfect translation

This may or may not have anything to do with the crash in France, but for you guys who are now flying your Triplanes or other WW1 replicas, if you have the chance to fly a simulated dogfight with another aircraft be very very careful about wake turbulence. I hit the wake of the Curtiss Fledgling at Rhinebeck once and was almost rolled upside down in the Triplane at low level, and Jim Appleby crashed his Triplane once from hitting wake turbulence from an aircraft in front of him.

Just a thought that came to mind-

Good point Andrew. I don't think most pilots realise how big a hole a biplane makes in the sky. Bitten once, hopefully not again.
