The DR-1 spins just fine. My fear would be loss of the rudder. A friends came off in the late 1970s resulting in it rolling over into the ground at low level.
As far as flying these planes goes I see many people who pour thousands of hours of blood sweat and tears into their projects only to go skip quality training and fly right away. This doesn't mean take 20 years of lessons but focus on good aerobatic training, upset recovery and tail wheel proficiency.
Its always sad to loose another pilot.

I have hit the wake of another whilst doing a dog fight display in the DR1 and as Bald eagle has said it can be quite alarming, at low level it could indeed be fatal. It is something that here in the UK you have to be aware of before you are issued with a Display Authorisation that includes tail chasing, in a turn at low speed the result can be even more alarming.

Slow but Steady

Things are moving slowly but I am making progress. I finished scarfing the top and bottom plates for all three wings this week. Will start scarfing the web plates this weekend. While working on the web plates I am going to start gluing the already scarfed peices togeather. I don't know how much detail you want on this site but since several of you asked for pics here are the latest.

Scarfing Jig (Didn't work as hoped but gave good idication of angle for the Planer)

Referance line (1 1/2" for the 1/8" ply)

First scarf (Not perfect but got better with each new scarf)

Just for information and in no way an official statement, lets let the French investigators do that! But my good friend who knew Francois and had spoken to him just before he left for the display has spoken to one of the guys who was there and watch the accident. It was the second day of the display, Francois was at the end of the display line and from what we can accertain in the translation pulled up into a wing over manouver, he was very slow and appears to have had inserficient speed to complete the manouever. He apparently had no Air Speed indicator in the Aircraft. He was not behind the SE5 at the time.
As I say not an official report but just something we have heard and though othes might like to know.

Apparently their main concern is now for Francois wife and daughter, as always it is those left behind that suffer the most. Thoughts are with them

RIP. Here, we lost 5 people in 2 crashes in one week, during the same period.

My condolences to all that knew the pilot, and bird. Our passion is one that comes with risks, and great rewards....

Flag at half mast..

OK, I just finished building 42 full length ribs and 14 at-aileron ribs per the plans sheet#5. Then it occurred to me to count the number of ribs in the wing drawings: sheets #12,13,14, (upper, center, bottom respectively).

I count only 38 full length ribs and 12 aileron ribs.

Have I built too many full length and at-aileron ribs? What am I missing?

Next on the list to build:
Wingtip ribs (6)
Full-length doublers (8)
At-Aileron doublers (4)
Center Wing Cutout ribs (2)
Landing Gear Ribs (6 - 4 inner & 2 end)

Cable question??

I'm finishing the aileron control cable, with 1/8 cable i don't have any problem with the AN100 cable thimbles, but how do you tight the AN111-4 cable bushing,
on the "turn" the cables are not really round, I'm not using sleeve, i prefere splicing the cable

and where do you leave the upper turnbuckle??

in most of aircraft the turnbuckle is in the middle of the wing, did you install yours at the end on the aileron control horn?

Mine are on the horns coming of the torque tube. I think this is where they are supposed to be. I have seen some people put them above the fuselage to make them easer to connect but then you have to look at them.
