Jim,

My brother and I are planning on being at Dayton also, we have attended several times, nothing says inspiration like seeing and hearing a full scale rotary powered airplane on final!
My brother is nearly done with his scaled Nieuport 17, though I doubt he gets it done in time for this years event.

Hope to see you there.

That's wonderful news Monty!

For those who can bring something of you projects, do. For those who can't bring pictures!

Spar Update

Been doing a little work on the lower wing spar flange "ladders" this weekend. The pics show the basic layout in the jig before any gluing - will glue and clamp this evening and let you all know how it turns out !

Thanks for the photos Fokker210.
I am going to use your idea of using aluminium angle when I start building my jig to keep everything straight. Finding straight, well seasoned timber is easier said than done.
Ive finished both rib jigs and will get a Wickes delivery (hopefully) on Thursday, so I can start on the ribs.

Wicks Aircraft Supply

Just a note to everyone who has dealt with Wicks: Karen Scobie (sp?) no longer works there- ask for Janet Schumacher instead.

Fokker210, thanks for these great photos- they really help make final sense out of the plans. Anyone else have photos of your building of the spars?

Thanks!

Fokker210,
I noticed that you are following the Sands spar layout which has splices at the strut mounting points. For anyone else who is buying wood, I bought material long enough to eliminate the outer splices. Doesn't really cost more in the total wood expense and saves 24 splices. Your spar table looks great, Wish I'd done it that way.

Hi Reed,

Could you elaborate a little more (and if you need to use photos, that's great!) abotu how to eliminate the splices?

Thanks!

Jim

Here's a sketch. Hope it is clear enough. I actually bought the spar stock about a foot longer than I needed and I use the drop for construction material for the spar spacers.

Spars

Good stuff, Reed ! Kinda wish I had gone that route now ! Those extra scarf cuts are a pain !

Anyway, Here is a pic of the "ladder" all clamped up in the jig ( sorry so dark! )

And here is the finished piece out of the jig - still needs the gussets glued in. Repeat five more times
