Spar Scarf Jig
While we are on the subject of jigs and such... Here is my simple jig for cutting the scarfs on the spar flanges. Just a bracing piece attached to a leftover piece of laminate flooring. The bracing piece is fastened at the correct angle to give me the correct length of scarf cut and the flange to be cut is clamped in. The entire jig is fed straight into the table saw.
The jig empty.
The flange clamped in place.
The finished piece.
Very simple and it works well...Maybe this will be a help to some. I know there are a thousand ways to skin a cat - this is not THE way, just A way !

Wing rib web discrepency
There is a discrepency in the location of the 3" lightening hole, in the front web, shown on the front web contour drawing, and the position of the same hole on the complete rib layout on the same sheet. It moves forward. Trace it out and you will see what I mean. I notice in the Leaman book that this hole is in the forward position on the original Tripe.
So where should I put my 3" holes or does it not matter?
Interestingly the Leaman book also shows a wing cord of 1000mm whereas the Sands is 1010mm.

I'll try and check tonight for you when I get home. Seems that I remember seeing the same discrepancy- I think I went with the finished rib placement of the holes... anyone else?

Same as Jim, here. I forgot that I had that same oops. I've mentioned way back that I bought a dehumidifier from Sears last year and it's been running ever since. I wouldn't have a shop without one. The working conditions are much more comfortable especially in the summer and your wood will maintain its dimensions and flatness much better.

That was a fun day. I would've taken more if I hadn't inadvertently shut off the @#$% digital cameral. Flying with two other Triplanes was phenomenal.
Off to England tomorrow to shoot down some Fokkers (there are supposed to be two Triplanes there, England based, don't know whose) on celluloid.... (or maybe it will be digital) www.flyboysthemovie.com
I know, I know, Triplanes are wrong, but you know how movie people are. Hopefully I'll be allowed to take pictures.

Have fun BaldEagle! I couldn't remember if this shot was yours or Brian's. Thanks for taking it! Good Luck in England and send some shots or stories when you can!

Documentry - The making of the film Flyboys
Have them make a behind-the-scenes documentry of how the film was made. That would be great to watch

Here are two of the aircraft that will be used, the Nieuport will be re-painted in French colors, don't know if the Triplane will get a re-paint, although it will need the earlier crosses-

Starting the Spar Brackets
While the glue was drying on some clamped up spar flanges, tonight I started to try a little work on the spar brackets. The first photo shows some plates destined to eventually become brackets and my forming jig ( nod to Worldcruiser ) with scrap attached and formed just to get an idea of the best way I can make these.
The next photo shows the finished piece - well, finished piece of scrap. I'm pretty happy with the first attempt and hope to be pumping out some real brackets shortly !
Hope everyone's build is progressing - anyone else with some updates ?
