Hello all.

Progress report:-

All ribs done and spar jig ready to go. Thanks to Fokker210 for the ali angle idea.

Now to figure out the best way to cut 48 x 48 ply sheets diagonally

I penciled a diagonal line from corner to corner. Then freehand cut the ply on the line as close as possible. From there I set the tablesaw fence at the required width(finished width plus trim) and cut the strips.

45 degree ply versus "45 degree" ply

At the risk of not being popular, isn't 45 degree ply put together with each ply's grain rotated 45 degrees with respect to the one before it? Rotating 90 degree ply 45 degrees is still 90 degree ply. If I am wrong, then sign me up with using the lesser expensive alternative. However, if using 90 degree ply rotated 45 degrees, when the design calls for 45 degree ply as it exists in my imagination, results in a safety issue, then that's a concern.

I like you guys!

Jim

As far as I can tell given the information on the plans, all that is called for is the grain to be situated at the 45 deg. angle. Rotating a 90 deg. sheet and cutting it to the 45 does provide this layout and is a much less expensive option. I have never heard anything about the underlying plys of 45 deg. sheets being set up at opposite angles to each other - interesting !

I don't think the plans actually call for 45 deg. ply, just that the grain itself be situated at the correct 45 deg. angle. One of the plans sheets ( #4 Update 12/02/02 ) actually shows the layout of the 90 deg. ply with all of the cuts on a 45. ( This was one of the update sheets that I received from Mr. Sands about a year before he passed away ).

I have spoken to a couple of other builders who are not in possession of these update sheets - Does everyone here have these ?

And Jim, don't worry........your still popular !!

Fokker210
Excellent question. When I get home I'm going to list all the drawings and revision numbers I have and check them against the current master list. Problem is, where is a list of the current drawings and material lists?? Is anyone in contact with the current Sands plans seller?? Maybe whoever bought the latest plans set could list their drawings and revision numbers. I bought my plans about four years ago.

I think this is a great idea. Fokker210, we look forward to confirmation of your update sheet notification. I bouth my plans literally a week or so before Ron passed away. I would be very curious if I myself don't have the update sheets! I am sure Ron Jr. can fix us up if we have any discrepancies.

And that's good news regarding the 45 vs 90 degree angled ply. Thanks again!

You hear about the Nieuport crash yesterday at ORA? Brian Coughlin suffered facial injuries and a broken leg, I think the plane did worse.

Worldcruiser,

Thanks for the info on cutting diagonally freehand. Did you use a table saw or something else? These big thin sheets are unwieldy and awkward.
