Just the photos shot I have been searching for. Would you mind posting some rear and left side shots as well? I am constructing a 1/4 scale Dr1 and need more visual for the guns detailing. Very nice pics, thanks

Spandau

FlyForFun

I know of some accurate pictures of the Spandau and they sell full-scale replicas for about $2500.00 a piece! As most everyone here will attest money like that is for the independently wealthy. Anyway, necessity being the mother of invention and a timely visit to Toronto with GreatWarPilot as a guide and VonGrube encouragement to start building and stop waiting (long sentence - attempting to win the Ernest Hemingway award), I began creating with what I had or could find at Home Depot. There are those on this site that have built outstanding replicas and they could give you a better picture. Mine is made of wood, PVC pipe, sheet metal, sprinkler materials, and Rat poison container. A visit to the local model hobby store for some gun metal & other metal paint, and there you have it. Since the guns will be about 6 feet away for anyone looking, I think they look great. I'm somewhat critical because I have "dispensed" 20mm ammo in a time long ago. Only close up can you see it is not metal. Amazing stuff. Here is the web site for the authentic replicas:

Here is another with computer drawings

http://mwmiller.theaerodrome.com/alb...au/spandau.htm

When I get back from my trip I will post some up close pictures. I have not made the exit chute, but it will be a curved rectangular shape with no openings as seen in the historical pictures. I have attached a historical photo of the Dr.1 cockpit from above and you can see the Spandaus.

I am not so sure about accurate and replica , the picture shows a 0815 made from different original parts and some new made parts with mistakes.

You can take a look at my website to see some pic of some Spandaus.
http://vintageaviation.net
You need to go to the Dr 1 close-up page; the Spandaus are at the end. The ones on 103/17 are original “dewats” these may be of some help, but since they are dewats some things may be missing.

The pictures were taken at Dayton this year by Rex who also posts on this page. The pics are a nice help for people who are building and have not had the chance to see a flying Dr1 up close. Thanks Rex for sharing this with us.

Joepilot,
Way to go!
Thats the way to do it! And you are so right. Whether you are building an aircraft for a museum or for airshow work, the bottom line is that the general public will get no closer than six feet. In reality..its probably more like 8-10 feet. Kind of takes the pressure off.
Anyway..love the gun. Have you started on the other one yet?

Nice web site Fritz, and good to see somebody's doing a lesser known scheme like Kempf's. Now when is somebody going to do Pippart's yellow and black Triplane?? http://www.us-aircraft.com/jasta19.htm

Worldcruiser,
Yes. They were made from the cut off spouts of octane booster bottles.
Here is the trick; you must extend the barrels right to end of the suppressors or the flames will melt the plastic. Even though..I can only fire three to four bursts of 4-6 rounds before the plastic gets too hot.
I am considering getting aluminum ones machined since its kind of a limiting factor.
