Graham Lee Siemens Schuckert DI replica

Gents,

I just picked up a Graham Lee 7/8 scale "Nieuport" replica. I'll be finishing it as the Siemens Schuckert DI (basically a Nieuport copy) and I'll post updates here as I progress.

Currently the structure of the fuselage (minus tailpost, rear cabanes, firewall, and landing gear) is completed, along with the lower wing structure and tail surface structures. (None are covered yet, and none of the control system is installed yet.)

I'll post pics later of how I transported it home- on the roof of my Honda Accord, on a "universal" roof rack with some other things added!

Brad,
Please reconsider doing the 3-color camo scheme. I'll mix up samples of the colors for you. Too bad we are not closer, I would like to help you on this.

Jan,

I'm thinking it over. I'm a little scared of flying a camo aircraft, just as a safety issue. A pokey, fragile WWI replica with (likely) no radio needs to be VISIBLE! I would like to do the camo job because I tend to like accuracy... but not at the expense of my own safety.

I haven't yet made any decision on colors.

I'll see you at Dayton and we can talk more. I'll be there all 3 days, and working the GWAA booth part of the time. Maybe you can show me there. Besides, I want to see your car in person!

I posted info on the Hope Hotel, the one Dick Starks recommended to us on the Nieuport Builders' list... and one of the folks on here is involved with the online gaming setup going on there.

Here is MPH_Murph's post on the Dayton thread in the Events forum:

S! All,

Here's a link showing hotels, maps, dining, attractions, wheather reports, etc for the Dawn Patrol Fly-In at Dayton from the Virtual Aces website at http://www.virtualaces.net/

Link
http://www.fallbabies.com/virtualaces/attractions.htm

Virtual Aces will be running a Red Baron 3D LAN event at the nearby Ramada Inn Limited Suites for all 3 days 24 hours a day of the Fly-In with 25 or more computers all linked to a dedicated server. Every one is welcome to stop in and grab a joystick for some flight time and fun or just hang out and swap lies, stories, info, etc. Hope to see you all there one way or another!

S! Murph
Looks like they have a LOT of good info on that site!

And my post on the same thread prior to that:

Blatant advertisement:

This is a forwarded message originally sent to the Nieuport Builders' list on yahoo by Dick Starks:

Greetings All Ya'll Low and Slow studmuffins and studmuffinettes,

FYI

I just called and got my reservations at the Hope Hotel in Dayton for the Rendezvous.

For those in the fly-in, it's $72 a night.

Pretty close to the museum and pretty nice.

Phone number - 937.879.2696

They had 75 rooms left out of 300 when I called and made our reservations.

dickiedoo

NOTE: I made my reservations today, and they only had non-smoking rooms with single queen beds left. If you want to stay at this hotel, I suggest reserving soon. I don't know what else is decent in the area, but I bet Jan could tell us.

p.s. tell them you are going to the airshow and you'll get $65 a night instead of $72.
Hope that helps!

Brad

Ok, it is unloaded and in the garage as of last night. It is astonishing how light the individual components are- the lower wings cannot be more than about 5# each without covering! Tail surfaces are too light for the calibration of my "hand scale" (i.e. pick it up and guess the weight) and the fuselage is an easy 1-handed lift, maybe 20# IF that.

Next step: Build the tailpost/skid mount and the landing gear legs, and get it on the gear.

Unfortunately I (being the techie guy that I am) can't work my digital camera... my daughter had it set to do videos and I didn't notice, so I got short video clips of the camera panning from the airframe still on the car to the ground, my feet, etc from several angles. I'll try to extract some (low res, since that is how the video is) images from this and post them.
