1919 Sopwith Schneider

Gentlemen,
Not quite WWI but the 1919 Sopwith Schneider may be the sexiest of the Sopwith aircraft (except its A.B.C. radial engine). It was later fitted with wheeled undercarriage. This would make an excellent project to hang a better radial on though. Unfortunately I've never been able to find drawings for one. Would anyone out there be lucky enough to have them hidden away?
Best,
William

The Schneider was designed around the 450 hp Cosmos Jupiter engine. It wasn't a happy plane - on its maiden flight, 10 September 1919, it nosed-over when Harry Hawker opened up the engine, it subsequently being established that the floats had been fitted too far back. It seems that on just about every flight the floats were damaged, including the Trophy race itself.

The Dragonfly-powered Schneider was actually the Schneider's airframe fitted around a 320 hp A.B.C. Dragonfly engine, fitted with a wheeled undercarriage and re-named the Rainbow. Confusingly, the
Rainbow carried the same registration as the Schneider, G-EAKI.

Flying this machine in the 1920 Aerial Derby, Hawker was disqualified for "an incorrect finish" - I wonder what he did?

No luck with drawings I'm afraid.

According to "Hawker" by LK Blackmore, the ABC engined machine was called the Rainbow. It retained the registration G-EAKI because it was a land plane rebuild of the Schneider.

Hawker was disqualified from the 1920 Aerial Derby because he followed the route used in previous years, he flew straight over the aerodrome instead of flying a circuit around some pylons. Hawker would have finished second if he had realised the rules had changed.

What would be sexy is if William's Canvas Falcons could re-engineer the ABC to work properly!

We still like the plane. My hunch is that a one off like this was lofted from sketches, a sort of design as you build. We'd be happy to see decent modelling plans.
Re-engineering the Dragonfly hmmm. Maybe after we finish our other projects . If you run across an original let us know, we've never seen one.
Best,
William
