Ouch. Am I seeing things or in that picture does it look like the rudder and stab got a little bit crushed? If so it would appear she went right over and this pic was taken while trying to right the old girl. Never a fun thing to have to do...

No, you are right. It does look like the rudder is crushed.

Sad news, but hopefully repairable (we do know the amount of work involved in something like this).

Posting on a board populated by exponents and experts entails the risk of being made to look a complete dill. The Kiwi article suggests an original. It's really a replica. How much modification can you make and still call the end product a replica ?

Ya lost me.

What has that to do with the rudder being damaged in the accident?

That makes two of us. My comment has nothing to do with the damaged rudder. I noticed the ailerons and that led me to query the extent of modification that those building replicas engage in. Just curious.

The Camel is an accurate replica powered by a 160 h.p. Gnôme-Monosoupape rotary engine. It was built some years ago by the renowned Carl Swanson in the USA (Wisconsin). It was bought by Peter Jackson a few years ago.

Gene De Marco, ex of Old Rhinebeck, is the usual pilot. He has had a number of adventures in the type. The engine threw a cylinder during an air show a couple of years ago and tore the cowling off. De Marco got it down OK.

I'm a tad confused also. What about the ailerons lead you to question the degree of modification from the original design Vin?
