Thumbs up Back from travelling, HD1 Quito

Dear all, first my apology for that long silence... a lot of travelling since last month.
Thank you all for your reply and thank you Dario to post a picture of the Quito ship. She still look like that.
I have since acquired Mr. Kiger plans and I am impressed. I guess with this and an actual original "on hand" a restauration should be realistic.
I need to finalize the project with the museum now.

On my next trip to Ecuador I will take more pictures and post some on the site.

Any idea of the actual color ?

Dario & all,
you have seen the craft is painted in silver dope now with FAE roundels but the actual color of "Telegrafo I" was pretty dark with clear letters.
My guess is that it was a brown color but can anybody support that ? Would there be some kind of typical paint / color by that time we could assume ?
Thanks for the inputs.
Eric

Exclamation Original color

I could not establish accurately the original color of the "Telégrafo I".
But if I coincide with you in affirming that definitively the color was not silver.
The first military airplane in Venezuela was also a Hanriot Macchi.
In the Venezuelan case, it is commonly accepted that the airplane brought by Rennella, was colored of green. Mainly for the reference of a visual witness that leave a written book.
It is possible that that it is the case of the Ecuadorian airplane.
It is more, if you detail the picture, observes that the clear line colored the Italian flag (with the white to the center).
With the Ecuadorian flag, the darkest color would go to the center. (Blue)
If you observe but attentively, they noticed that the Italian flag seems still to be painted, in the inferior part of the superior wing plane, of the airplane.
These pilots acquired these airplanes of the inventories of the Italian aviation, for what the color could settle down, as the same one that was normalized in Italy for that date.
Waiting to have contributed in something.
Dario

Hanriot HD-!

Hi All~
I just checked their website and "The Chino Air Museum" still has an Hanriot. I think it was one of the first a/c in Ed Maloney's collection. He acquired it from long-term storage at Santa Monica airport where it had been since the early 20's~ Nungesser had brought it to the States for some barnstorming, it's said. He damaged it in Denver and from there it was shipped to SM~ to what was then known as "Clover Field"~ As I last saw it at Chino, many years ago, it was overall silver and still had Nungesser's marveously macabre personal insignia on the fuselage~ I think in subsequent years it may have been painted in USN colors.
If I may: to Rich Bennett: Rich were you the machine shop owner who was, a few years or so back, considering replication of Mercedes engines? If so, I recall some contact with you regarding the interest of the Paso Robles group (Arranga/Wentworth)~ in your thinking~ A few years ago Chuck W. asked me if you were still available and interested in such a program~

Hanriot builder in Ohio

I am not the one. There must be another Rick Bennett. I am working on a Hd-1 using Macchi and Kiger drawings. It will be full size, original construction, with 80 LeRhone. I have some of the instruments, wheels, cowl, linen, and a Vickers for it. I should be ready to assemble the fuse by summer and have collected most of the supplies needed to complete the project.

Has any one seen plans or a tool for bending music wire up to 1/8"? I have been able to make the ferrules on my laythe but need to form the loops in the ends of the bracing wires.

Book on Italian Aircraft and Pilots in Ecuador

Hello all,
Should have probably brought this up earlier in the thread, but there is a fantastic book out regarding "Telegrafo I" and other Italian pilots and aircraft flying the early routes in Ecuador. The title of the book is Piloti ed Aerei Italiani dal Pacifico alle Ande: Primi Voli Postali in Ecuador by Fiorenzo Longhi. It was published in 1995. 280 pages, hardcover, and a huge cover photo of "Telegrafo I." The text is, clearly, in Italian, but the photos alone are FANTASTIC. Literally packed with photos of "Telegrafo I" other Hanriot HD.1's. Sopwith 1 and 1/2 Strutters, Macchi flying boats, Salmsons, Ansaldos, Spads, etc. I consider myself moderately up to speed on whats out there as far as Italian aircraft in WWI, and this book is loaded with pictures not seen elsewhere. One shot in particular: "Telegrafo I" during an overhaul in the 1920s, all fabric off, structure, etc. I found the book by complete chance in an antique store, of all places, in NYC. My 2 years of college Italian has been streched to the limit I think!
So, just to toss that out there to look for....
Thanks everyone who has contributed to this forum regarding Hanriots, Italian aircraft, etc from WWI......
Pete
