What about the Walther LOM engines? Are any of them big enough, and how hard are they to invert?

again the Lom engine , big enough to drive my coffee machine . And about the GQ 30 , can anybody show me fotos about a successful converted one ?
successful !
Has anybody a rough idear how complex this job is ? You have to change the oil feed for the main bearings , to build a oil line for the rocker arms and to get all this oil back to the not existing oil sump .

I remember when I first joined this forum, you observed of how the same old questions keep popping up ... now that I have been here a while, I understand. I too have seen the same questions come up over and over again.

I understand that Darrel is gathering research to build a plane, and I hope that he does! This forum should be the place to turn. You know I personally would love to see a whole fleet of these DVII's fly again someday ... even with all the variations!

I think that collecting the details of the different modifications, and collecting the results of these mods is worth studying. For instance:
1) I know of a few projects where the builder has added additional washout to the wings, I would like to see the pilot reports on how that turned out!
2) I would love to collect the weights of the various DVII projects and compare them. I would think that a Ranger engine should be able to do the job well enough, if it can lift a 2900lbs PT-19, why not a 1600lb Fokker DVII? Unless of course your Fokker weighed in at 2500lbs.
3) I would love to collect the technical variations of the different engines used in the various DVII projects. How the the engines are installed, collect technical details on the fuel, oil & electrical systems used.

I think that future builders would find this helpful when building their project.

Ranger powered D.VII flying in Oklahoma

Jeff,

In 2002 I stopped by Barney Peterson's place near Tulsa and looked at the Ranger powered D.VII he has. I was flying and has since starred in a movie (Flyboys, I think). It is a beautiful airplane. I think getting a replica flying will be more impportant thank having it an exact museum quality example. I'm very impressed by the progress you've made with your project. I'm hoping to get down to see Javier's airplanes soon to see how they are built.

I spent a very rewarding two days researching the Smithsonian's archives when I first started seriously considering this project. That was where I found out about World War I Aero and other resources. I hope I'm one of the dreamers who finally get an airplane built and flying before I'm too old to enjoy it. Life sometimes gets in the way, but I'm still dreaming.

I am still waiting for the fotos about a converted GQ engine . I believe the part " successful " makes it difficult . And for all the people who are interested in a GQ , the first step is always to ad a modern generator to the engine .Because with enough electric power you can ad a fan to stop the engine from overheating ! You guys think this is a joke ? I did see in Berlin - Fürstenwalde a Farman III with a Lom engine and a electric fan for cooling . And 2 weeks ago in Le Mans ( France ) a aircraft with 2 electric fans for cooling the engine .

Franzkait, I added to your statement. If you can't keep the engine cool in flight, that is a much bigger and much worse problem. I suspect the electric fans are to allow you to taxi to the end of the runway without exceeding cylinder head temperatures.

Compass mounts ...

I wanted to post this to the compass mount thread, but it was closed ... so I will post them here. I just got these nice photos from Langdon Bagder ... he bought one of the compass mounts with the correction magnets. He has an original Carl Bamburg compass with ring, and it fit into it perfectly. He sent pictures, so I thought I would share them.
