jeff,

I am waiting on the release of the new and updated plans from replicraft to get started. I haven't done anything so far. Any reccomendation on tools needed? also, what kind of space should I consider for building?

I will keep your generous offer in mind, if I do need anything I will drop you a line. Great photos, really! I am very impressed with your build.

BTW - how much did you pay for your frame? I am thinking of having one put together by an outside source, seeing as how my welding skills are non-existent. Any reccomendations?

thanks for the support..

dtenney

dtenney,

As far as tools needed, I bought my own gas welding setup & rented tanks. this makes learning convenient. Also, find a friend who welds and pay him/her in beer or something to teach you. I learned a lot just watching. I also have many Army books on .pdf format on aircraft maintenance. They are pretty good because the army writes manuals at an 8th grade reading level ... they keep it simple! Send me your email in PM and i'll forward them to you.

Get yourself an Aircraft spruce catalog. (you can also google them, their catalog is online) You are gonna need a tube notcher to start with. As you learn to notch and prep the steel, whoever is doing your welding will let you know how you're doing. Almost all of welding is in the prepwork. Aircraft Spruce is a pretty good source for tubing too!

You can start your build in your garage for starters! Buy some plywood and 2x4s and build a table right in your garage. You'll see the layout in the sands builder thread.

I got the frame for about the cost of the metal ($1500.00). You would be hard pressed to find someone to make one for that price. Brian wanted to get rid of it, and I was in the right place at the right time.

jeff,

good information! I have written that stuff down, making notes on what to get.
More education is in order, thats for sure. Thanks again for your help. I have sent you a PM, so be on the look out for it. Again, thank you for your support.

Oh, also - what paint scheme are you going to use for your bird?

Also consider TIG welding instead of gas.

Material cost for airframe, tail, fuel tank, seat, etc.. will be around 10K, lots of profile tubing. This price not include wood and plywood.

Last night and today I have been tackling the throttle and mixture linkages. (I will post pictures of how I figured them out later). Now that the engine is set in place, I can start attaching the controls. Then I have to figure out where to best put the oil cooler, thermostat & battery. After they are in place, I have to route the plumbing & wires for these. so it will be a while.
What slows me down the most is everyday life! I have to spend quality time with the wife & kids (while they are small)!
