Hi all,
I worked on the horizontal stabilizer today.
I started at 8:30 after putting the kids on the bus, and worked continuously till 4:30. adding the time it takes to document it here ... about 9 hours.

The horizontal stabilizer is being made using the Kiger drawings as a reference. Modifications from the drawings are for the size tubing used:
1) The frame is listed as 36mm dia x 1mm wall, this was substitute for 1 3/8" dia x .035" wall
2) the ribs are shown as 10mm dia x .75mm wall. I used 3/8" dia x .028" wall.

I welded the parts together using Oxy-acetylene gas welding. The torch tip size varied from 00 to 000 depending on the thickness of the metal. Where ever the tubing joined, I drilled holes to allow the air to move freely. Later this will allow lindseed oil to move around inside the frame.

Today's work included connecting the three outside ribs on both sides to the frame, making the clamp on the front & welding the last of the frame together.

Jeff,
Really like your last photo!
I assume that all the red is marker and not: 1 - blood; 2 - bank account!
Regards,
JW

I posted the sizes earlier ... and I am concerned it might be heavy ... without the original metal available here in the states ... this looks like the best I can do.

Today I finished welding the ribs on the frame of the horizontal Stab. I spent about 3 hours on it today.
After weighing it, the old one was 22lbs, while the new one was 17lbs. The british report says 17.6lbs complete with wood & fabric.
Looks like I am still not quite there yet. If I can get the metal with a thinner wall, that might do, the other option is to go down 1 scale in the tube size ... from 1-3/8" to 1-1/4". I am not sure yet if I wanna go that route.

Welding and Technical Education

Jeff:
Super job. You get the prize in public education and motivating the novices
among us toward technical excellence.

This is about a lot more than just construction of a replica D.VII.

How accurate are the scales, and approx cost? Looks like a "must have" for the experimental workshop.

I got the scale out of the MSC catalog. I am not sure of the cost ... $120 -$150 I think? I have to look it up.
Now if I could just get my welding to look more professional!
