Fokker D.VII Plans

Hello All,

It has been quite a while since I have last made a post - life's gotten in the way again. Now that I am able to concentrate again on a project, I have a question or two about plan sets.

Which plan sets are available to work from? Which are best? I have heard that Replicraft is again offering a set, as well as the Kelly set from WW1 Aero ( Leo Opdyke) in NY. Which is reccommended?

Actually, maybe Achim Engels may know a bit about this. Achim? Are you out there? Please, Achim, grant me your wisdom on this - Does FTS have a plan set?

Thanks to all who post a reply, any information is helpful. Thanks.

Dtenney

The Ultimate Fokker D.VII Drawings!

Dtenny,

Do yourself a GIANT favor and just order the ultimate Fokker D.VII Plan Set drawings from Jim Kiger of REPLICRAFT!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.replicraft.us.fm/

You will never find more COMPLETE and ACCURATE D.VII drawings anywhere else. ALSO, they have been recently updated to reflect the lastest found FOKKER FACTORY D.VII drawings! It's the best bargain of the century at $65.00.

I too have the old, outdated, inaccurate Kelly drawings that I would certainly avoid relative to the REPLICRAFT Plan Set. Perhaps Achim might produce a full set someday? They too would be excellent to see.

Regards, Gary Sewall

what kind of engine are you planning to put into your project? this is critical when you are building! you may have to modify those plans to get your engine to fit right! this is good to know before you weld all those tubes together!
Goodluck with your project! let me know if you need anything!

gypsymoth, jeff;

thanks to you both for some good information. I am working on getting the updated set of plans from replicraft, however it seems that they are not ready yet, should be another 3-4 weeks. So, I will wait ( grrrr ) and grab them when they are available.

Jeff, to answer your question, I would like to find a 6 cyl, 250 HP Gypsy Queen motor - something that really fills the cowls! But, I may have to settle for a Ranger motor. My main goal in choosing a motor is to be able to swing a larger prop, something like an 8 foot prop instead of a skinny, tooth pick like 6 foot prop that would be appropriate for using a ranger motor. Makes the plane look a little more authentic.

I am in the "learning" phase all over again, I thank you both for your input. Jeff, I looked at your thread on your project D.VII, and the pictures are awesome! Great craftsmanship!

thanks..

engine selection

Engine selection is everything for a DVII these days. Gypsy queens are pretty tough to find. Look at "the replacement for mercedes thread". If you find a gypsy great if not why don't you talk to the fellow in British Columbia that is using a 6 cyl Ford with reduction gear. I don't remember the guys name maybe maxim 08(?) Maybe the rest of you guys can chime in. The fellow had some video of the engine running. Looks like he also had a decent size prop on the engine.

Buck,
If only I was that creative!
It's 'von writter' that you are referring to in British Columbia, Canada. The other published developer (via WW1 Aero) is Douwe Blumberg. 1 or 2 articles appeared with pictures sometime in the last 2 years showing a modified Chev in-line 6 swinging a full size Axial style prop..

John

franzkait, and others -

thanks for the replies. I appreciate the feedback. I know that there are the replicraft set, and another set offered by WWI Aero and I think even FTS may have a set. Between all three I think there should be a great resource to build from.

I could see doing an In-line 6cylinder automotive engine from either ford or chevrolet that uses a reduction gear, I think that may be a more affordable route as I have a couple of resources for finding an 6cylinder inline ford motor from a 60's mustang ( 260 c.i.d i believe). Does anyone know how to contact the gentleman that has done the above referenced example?

I will look through the other thread to read up on it, interesting idea - being able to swing a full size prop with an automobile engine - interesting indeed.
