Sopwith Pup project queries

Hi all,

I'm in the very early stages of a full-scale airworthy Sopwith Pup project, and I'm working from Jim Kiger's Replicraft plans. I've hit a bit of a snag regarding tube sizing for the vertical stabiliser and rudder. The plans say nothing! If you know what I should use, or have access to original Sopwith info about this, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

In addition, the detail on rudder control horns is very vague. What I'd dearly love is detail photos of original Sopwith machines, or if this isn't possible, any replica machines around the world.

At this point that's all I require, but no doubt will be calling on you all in the next few months as things progress!

Cheers,
Zac

Hello Zac,
If you know which drawings that you need we'll try to send them to you. Please e-mail me and tell me more about your project. Also please post more about it as Sopwiths are slightly under-represented on the forum .
Best regards,
William

Thanks William! Email inbound!

I've just recieved an email from Jim Kiger....my apologies once more! The tube fittings *are* on one of the sheets, so I'll have to take a closer look next time!

Updates/requests as and when!

Hi all,

Still on the lookout for "interior"/structure pics of Pup/Triplane vertical tails and rudders. If you have anything, please let me know. We aren't aiming for total, Grand Champion late-production authenticity here, but would like to stay resonably true to the original where possible.

So don't hesitate to PM or email! I'd dearly love to hear from you.

The San Diego (California) Aerospace (or is it "Air and Space?" I forgot) had a beautiful uncovered pup replica in the entryway. I'm sure they could provide the information you are seeking.

The Canadian Warplane Heritage group in Mount Hope, Ontario have a flawless rotary powered Pup built by ex-dehavilland canada test pilot George Neal. George is noted for his retoration of the Hawker Hind for the Canadian Aviation Museum in Ottawa. Like most av related museum's, if you can talk the talk, they would undoubtedly provide closeup access.

John

oops, just noted the Bleinhew address. A bit of a trip for you. John

Hi all! Thanks for the replies! Very encouraging!

John - were it not for the several thousand miles to Hamilton, I'd be in my car to CWH right now! If I had the spare cash I'd make the pilgrimage, but unfortunately the cost of airfares, accomodation etc is about the same for the steel tube for the fuse!

Jeff - at the moment all I need is some closeups of the vertical tail and rudder. I think the horizontals may be handy to have, too, but the current subassembly being worked on is the fin.

Brad - thanks for the info, I'll see if I can get in touch with them. If they can provide it, I'm sure some photos of that would be a great help. Sounds like an amazing display!

Shredward, thanks a million for the link! Handy for having a drool at some other examples!

In addition, the RNZAF Museum at Wigram has a masterful Pup built by Skysport in the 1980s...I'm hoping to get down there soon for a close look. I'll post pics if this comes to pass!

Stay tuned! And thanks again!
