Ranger engine pricing

I am trying to figure out the value of a Ranger engine. I have a line on two Ranger engines and need some help on their value.

Here is what I know;

1) They are 175Hp units, 6-440-C

2) one has old military O/H and no accessories, (what is a miliary overhaul?)

3) one has most of the accessories

4) no logs

What are they worth?

Phil,
Having not seen them, I suspect they are just engine cores. A core that has the two mags and the carb, would probably cost about $1000. Without the mags & carb, I wouldn't pay over $500, but even the selection of Rangers are starting to dry up.
You need to understand the various model designations: the C2 is the most plentiful, its the standard Ranger engine of 175hp; Then it goes up C3, C4, and the C5 is the final 200hp model (higher compression).

I think someone said to me the military, Time Between Overhauls (TBO) on the Rangers was conservative, and they probably have more life available in them. The problem I'm worried about is corrosion inside. I haven't disassembled any of mine yet to inspect. The black oil has turned thick, almost like a tar. Its old.

A military o/h is one that has been accomplished by military personal. It may or may not have been accomplished I/A/W/ the manufactures overhaul manual as a cilvilian o/h would be required. The military specs. could be the same or different depending on how they were operating the engine.

I spoke to a friend of mine about your quest for a Ranger or Gypsy queen eng. but he couldn't help either. Sorry I am not of more help.
