Now I find this fascinating on a number of levels. For those unfamiliar Baikonur is the Russian space cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. I find what looks like a light private plane in an obviously hardened and once super secret concrete hangar fascinating. Images of the Iron curtain coming down are still fresh in my memory.

So if the locals in Lithuania are calling this place "Baikonur", it is a "pun" on a once secret but now private airfield.

The fact that I am seeing people from places like Lithuania and Romania now in a position to be able to contemplate such niceties as WWI aeroplanes as a hobby, gives me a little hope for the world.

Bravo, well done!

Joe,
while I echo your sentiments about the fall of the wall and such... and I've been around a few hardened hangars... that hanger is far from hardened

did you look at the google earth image?

Rob,

Actually, no I did not.... nor can I from here at work today. What did you see?

Looking at the picture, it looked like concrete I beams in there, so compared to the truss and tin can buildings I've ever been exposed to,... it looked to me like it might have been hardened. Still, I have no military frame of reference since my Navy hangars at N.A.S. Kingsville were big, but lightweight as I recall.

In any case, I think it's quite neat to see them having fun in eastern Europe like this, I remember the storming of the TV station (their version of "Bloody Sunday") in Lithuania, and the revolt against Ceauşescu in Romania like it was yesterday....getting old perhaps!

unfortunately it is not in a high resolution area... so it is hard to tell if it is paved or not.. but it seems to be small, less than 2000 feet or 600 meters in length with a single group of structures... probably just the one hangar shown in the photo. It is set back among farm fields... looks like a nice little field to explore.
