Hi,

Congratulations to all involved - a beautiful airplane and beautiful flying! Like Russ, I appreciate the use of a rotary.

I see from the markings you've chosen to duplicate the insignia of Dr.I 213/17, flown by that famous ace Werpaulner Bäumervoss of Jagdstaffel 2,610!!

Aw, don't mind me - I'm just a markings geek. It really is a magnificent work of art. Great to see it flying - congrats again on all the terrific workmanship.

Yes, I feel your pain. I am a markings geek also. It is my understanding it was a deliberate decision made a long time ago to not make the aircraft a replica of any known Dr 1, I think so as to not belittle any real German pilot in an "airshow" context with the DR 1 playing a fictional "bad guy"...for the crowd. I am not much into that, but it is sort of an "old school" tradition and if you are trying to capture the flavor of old air shows.... If the opportunity to repaint or recover the aircraft comes up I will be voting for a more authentic markings. The museum does have a Hipple DVII that is in accurate markings but an issue has come up on the tail feather color's of Hipple's aircraft. Hardly anyone has seen this aircraft as it has never been engined but that is in the works and is otherwise complete.

The "fly-in" is in May. With a bit of luck the Canuck will be back in the Air, maybe even by April. The engine re-installation was just been completed. I don' know yet when the next volunteer workday is scheduled. Probably at least two more before the fly in. With the Dr 1 so close to flying we had been doing twice a month workdays (not just on the Dr 1 but the Dr 1 has been a driving force), and some of us that just will not miss a workday have our tongues out, but I think now that the milestone has been reached, perhaps a little more normalcy.
Javier's Spad XIII is under steady construction, a true work of art, is always worth a look (I noticed that the metal parts are getting camo paint now), and of course Buck's beautiful DVII takes a center stage in the workshop. With the stuff from the estate in, the number of engines is mind-boggling (and many of the crates are yet to be opened) space is at a premium. The Kingsbury buildings about to burst at the seams with neat stuff. To get things done we have to move planes, vehicles, and other great stuff constantly. There is a museum on the "wish list" and there as there are so many great artifacts just begging for proper display.
I know the Fly-in is great fun, but it is also great just to visit and walk around, especially on a workday when a lot of different things are going on and the volunteers, and of course Roger, are always willing to converse....and occasionally something flies on the workday.
Come on down....of course you might be drafted into pulling this or that out of the hangar...mounting something on an aircraft...getting some Model T driving time in.

Dang! The one weekend I had to stay here in Houston.........I knew that would happen! Oh well, I guess I'll just have to go every weekend from now on so as not to miss any action..........

Although I was not there, I try to imagine the "pucker" factor Roger might have been experiencing on that flight. What a landing!

Believe me the entire volunteer group is so happy to see her take to the air. I hope the Jenny and the two Tommies will follow later this year.
