Little jewels

Hi all,
Many of you may have seen these before, but for those who haven't, they're fun to marvel at (and pricey to collect). Be sure and check out the rotaries under "Large Motors" at the bottom of the Gasparin motors page.

Franzkait, How does the fatigue life of an investment cast connecting rod compare to whatever process was used originally on the Oberursel connecting rods? Forging is usually the gold standard for parts like these.

about radial engines con rod problem . Master rod - Slave rod , only the master rod center makes a round circle , all the slave rod lower end center make an ellipse . For example , a 5 cylinder radial , top cylinder ( master rod )all timing for valves and ignition is OK. first cylinder left ignition 5 degrees to late . Second cylinder left , ignition 10 degrees late . first cylinder right ignition 5 degree to early . second cylinder 10 degree to early . If you switch turning direction it is for all cylinders the opposite . so one cylinder is always hotter compare to all the others . a 5 cylinder master rod has enough space to compensate 80 % of this problem with drilling the slave rods holes in differed positions , a 7 cylinder still a little bit , with a 9 cylinder no chance . all timing with a 9 cylinder is very bad . the Oberursel with his con rod system has not this problem .

Sid , forgings are used because they are mutch cheaper if you need a big number . the foto shows con rod forgings for my Diesel aircraft engine , but the tool is very expensive . there is no problem with fatigue life , but the rods need head treatment . This rods are casted from Walter in Prag , each rod is tested and has a certificate . This company is casing a lot of jet engine parts like rotor blades .
