hallo nick,
great to see your progress.
enjoy the moment. i think i know exactly what you feel when everything is coming together.
the thing with the door is of only minor importance. you will solve it.
but make sure that the construction will hold before you slam out a door. i know from expierience.
cheers

Garage Clearance

Hi Nick

Probably a silly question regards clearance through the garage door. If you machine up a couple of nylon or plastic rollers to fit on the axle, with OD just large enough to allow undercarriage legs to clear the ground, would this allow you to remove the U/C wheels & have enough clearance to wheel out from the garage with the tail raised ?

Thanks everyone for your comments, very much appreciated. Still a long way to go but a milestone nevertheless. Flight controls next, and still hoping to get some Terne plate at some stage for the fuel & oil tanks.
Good suggestion re making rollers instead of the wheels to get out the garage Damian. I was thinking of a trolley but the rollers are a good idea. Unfortunately it’s still too high even then (my Garage door is only 7 foot high) so the centre section will have to come off again.

Cheers, Nick

Have been making the flight controls and currently doing the footsteps that we discussed earlier back in post #167 . These are attached to the counter shaft control and rotate with elevator use. At the top of the steps it calls for 3/16” Steel “Snaphead” Rivets. All the other fittings that have used rivets have just called for steel rivets.
On close inspection of photos of the steps in Barker’s Snipe they actually used bolts not rivets so am planning on doing the same.
However I’d like to know what a “Snaphead” rivet is, as have no idea and am getting varying opinions. Bearing in mind this is 1918 and before pop rivets.
Any ideas?

Highslide JS

Cheers, Nick

Hi John. I believe that Aldis sights were painted black. If you look closely you will see traces of black paint in proteced areas of the magnificent Aldis sight that you have. Regards, David.

Nick,

I haven't commented in a while because I've been so busy with my own research project lately, but I've certainly been keeping tabs on the thread. Stunning work. Keep at it, and I look forward to seeing the in-flight shots of you and your machine one of these days.

Can't compliment you enough for the lengths you're going to in order to produce an accurate replica.

Cheers,

The name sounds like it could be something like that. “Snaphead” sounds like either as you say two pieces that snap together or maybe a rivet that part snaps off. There are plenty of steel rivets used on various fittings but have not seen the term “snaphead” used anywhere else.

Cheers, Nick
