All about Engines

I made this thread to concentrate on WWI Aviation Engines.

I also started this because I have a few questions one is How do the Cams operate the pushrods on Rotaries and Radials. Take the Clerget for example, how does its cams operate the 18 pushrods?(better if with drawings, Ilustrations, pics, animations), My second Question is: Is there anybody out there remanufacturing Rotaries and can you convert a Radial engine to run as a rotary?

That sums it up.

I don't know if Radials have ever been converted to run as Rotaries although it seems like it should be possible. I do know that rotaries have been converted to run as radials:

If I'm not much mistaken, the valves are operated by a wheel with notches ground into it. The pushrods rest on this, and as the wheel/plate rotates, the high points press the pushrods upwards.... Or something to that effect. One of the gurus around here will probably come along and correct me or, hopefully, do a better job explaining.

Here you can see how the pushrods are driven by the cams.

This is a 130hp Clerget.

Cams

I think i know why they are offset.

They are offset because the Cams have to engage every other pushrod on the engine.

Correct me if im wrong :P
