I've decided to go with the Albatros instead (probably D.Va) It's similar in size and looks, but there seems to be much more info and help available. Plus it's an actual combat plane.

Should get started early this winter. In the meantime I'm going to gather all the information I can, and buy the engine core (Chevy 292 or Model A/T).

Great links, thanks guys.

I'll be getting the NASM d.Va reference book soon, havn't found a copy for sale yet. I've read that complete factory drawings exist for the Albatros, is this true?

Air and Space Albatross publication

I got my copy of Makesh's DVa book from the nice folks at BYRD AVIATION BOOKS, Williamsburg, VA. Don't have the web address at hand but a google search should turn them up. They also have Datafiles and lots of other good stuff, and are willing to find OOP publications as well. ..........John

Found it, thank you Olsen.

Any way this thread can be re-named to reflect my change in aeroplane?

Ed,

I am very glad to have another guy building an Albatros. To tell you the truth, I was hoping you would build the Deperdussin because of how rare it would be to have someone doing one here on the forum. But I understand the draw of building the Alb, whatever version you land on.

Couple of thoughts,

1) Pick the a/c - You can get orginal plans for a DIII from a gent in Austria. I can hook you up with his name. They are pricey and I don't know if they are complete. The DIII is quite a bit more complicated to build. The good news is you have one of the best builders of DIII's on the forum, and Koloman doesn't seem to mind my idiotic questions!

The DVa is my fav, better lines over the DIII. Plans are a problem. Again, the good news is Chris is pretty far along and he doesn't seem to mind my idiotic questions! There are quite a few others who are in the middle of builds as well. Everybody references the Mikesh book which has the Waugh plans. He is not keen on having people copy his plans. There are other sources, but you will need to do some work to bring them all together.

2) Pick the engine - You need to know the properties of your powerplant before you get started so you don't get stung by things like the physical dimensions, weight and power output. Ranger, underpowered but popular due to price and availability. GQ30 - my choice, but hard to find. GQ70 - Pavel is inverting one for his DVII build, easier to find, but nobody has flown an inverted one. Auto engines - some have it figured out, but they need to get some actual flying time before I'd consider one.

3) The build - How are your woodworking skills? Be honest here, your life is now depending on how much you know about joining wood! I decided I didn't know enough about building an a/c. Luckly, I am close by to Jeff Brooks and have been working with him to learn the basics and get my feet wet. I am also trying to learn a CAD program to get all the parts and pieces documented and to make sure they will all go together in the virtual world before I make sawdust!

I will be putting together a thread asking all the Albatros builders to give a shout out about their project and how far along they are in their build. I'll get to it tomorrow.

I wish you luck and would be happy to speak with you if you need assistance.

Phil
