Its fun stuff!

We did a similar stunt/experiment with our Strutter and Red Triplane. I was in the gunner's pit weilding a Lewis on Scarff ring (and Camera). I had a harness that allowed me to stand up and get a feel for the what those poor boys dealt with.

Even on a hot July day I was a bit chilled and I had on a full WW1 sidcot suit and shearling gaunlets!

Trying to swings around a Scarff ring against the prop blast to "bring fire to bare on a target" to the sides was a huge effort!

You can quickly gain a lot os respect for what they did and had to endure!

You also see how all the armchair banter goes out the window and that if you were there you'd do anything to stay alive with a sight like that red triplane on your tail and hurling lead your way!

Here's a couple of pics from our day of fun.

Wow! Nice shot!

With a Dr-I on its tail, I hope the 1 1/2 strutter did not begin to stutter!

Spectacular! A real inspiration to join the fun! The Strutter, is much prettier in the air than on the ground!

These shots (Major Larabee's and Bill's) are done as fun and games between friends at close range. I wonder something though........

What was the usual range to target before opening fire? I can imagine perhaps several hundred yards?

It would be interesting to see the DR.I turning in at that range, just to get an idea of what a combat pilot may have seen before really starting to get nervous. Next time you guys do this, take a couple shots like that as well out of curiosity.

Photographs

Ausgezeichnet, guten Fotografen! Interesting to note how the fabric between the rib tapes (on the close up in post # 4) of the DR1 wing balloons up/out with the negative pressure of lift. Not being a full scale pilot, I've never seen this phenomenon before this, which is a good demonstration of why rib stitching and taping is so necessary........John

I was looking at that photo thinking the same thing and then saying to myself, "Well, there is a wing that's doing something." I wonder which of the three wings was thought to be superfluous.

Hey Bill,

That was a fun photo shoot with the tripe and the strutter. Although, I must admit that taking that shot of you in the strutter was a bit of a trick. Not everyday I have to fly close formation with my left hand, while taking the photo with a camera in my right. In hindsight, it gives me new respect for the Fokker D.VII flying that William Barker did in 1919 when he only had the use of one hand.

Cheers,
