Can you explain how Franzkait's and The Vintage Aviator's repro Oberursels differ? They both seem to have very professional reproductions with high manufacturing standards

Mad Mac,
One major difference is that Franzkait's are (were?) for sale and the TVAL ones are not.
Regards,
John

Does anyone know if Udo ever finished the first one? Back on his thread, on 11/14/2008, he had still not finished the first. Is that correct?

I'm kind of curious also. The workmanship was inspiring. It was so great to see bare castings then see the process to create a finished part. Incredible work. But then the posts stopped in Nov '08? I'm the new guy on the block so I was afraid to ask????

Udo (Franzkait), is an interesting fellow. I hesitate to make any assumptions on a man based on the occasional bits and bytes but, my impression is that he is not only an extremely talented machinist, but also well read and intellectual. This despite his cryptic and sometimes biting posts, (perhaps lost in translation).

If life's not thrown him a curve-ball, expect him to re-surface with something spectacular.

Many thanks for the photos - I consider the mechanical beauty of that engine a masterpiece. Truly a work of a master craftsman.

Excellent work Udo! It sure would be nice to see some more reproduction rotaries being produced, and it's great to see the few that have been produced so far. I hope to be able to make a contribution to making at least some parts available to builders and restorers very soon, and eventually complete engines. I went to see the guys at the airfield today. Dave, the guy who runs the airfield suggested that I go to see the machinist, to have some parts photographed, which I will do when I down their way next time. I was having a good look at one of the cylinders for the 110 HP le Rhone. They sure are very lightly built, particularly the cooling fins. On the original, they would be no more than about 0.25 mm thick or so, literally almost paper thin. Dave told me that this feature is one of the most difficult features to reproduce on a new engine.

Cheers,

David.
