Hi'ya
I'm starting to build a display Dr-I rudder . I need to order some fabric from overseas ( the U.S. ) and as I've never done any of this stuff before I thought I would ask how much fabric is required for the job ? . The dimensions of the rudder are approx 920 mm x 900 mm . So I was thinking of ordering 2 square metres of fabric ( or 6 square feet in U.S. talk ) . Is this enough ? , or should I order some more ?.
Hope the question isn't too dumb to bother with , but I don't want to make a mistake .Just to add to my confusion , the fabric is sold in " lineal yards "...so is a linea yard a square yard or what ?
Also , the site sells linen waxed and unwaxed lacing cord . Is this the stuff needed to sew it together with ?..Or if not , what is the normal thread to use ?.
Thanks for any advise .
Phil.

Not much on fabric here, but as a bit of a math whiz, I see a problem with one of your conversions. *A square yard is 9 square feet. *2 square metres works out to a bit more than 21-½ square feet. *Heading out to look up fabric bolts, I think might be a key term.

Looks like the width of a bolt can vary from about 50" to 60" (1300mm to 1500mm) and generally is purchased by the yard (914.4mm.) *Maybe 3 yards would be advisable to be sure of your coverage.

HTH

P.S. Would you share the site directions?

As it is a display item, how about using something closer to home? A new cotton bed sheet of high quality would approximate WWI era fabric and probably cost a lot less than having fabric shipped from US. Waxed (bees wax) rib lacing is a flat chord about 1/16 of an inch wide, perhaps 1/32 of an inch thick. You might find something similar at a local yardage store? We have built several display aircraft using non aircraft materials and the finished product looks real enough!

Thanks for those measurements Charlie . I'm not so hot on Imperial measurements comming from a metric country . Your idea about getting material closer to home spurred me into phoning a few suppliers . They couldn't tell me anything about fabric in threads per inch ( or per cm or mm ) , but they did have linen rated by weight . So I'll check out their stock and see if I can find something close . As it was the stuff I was going to order was about 10 tpi out from original anyway . Good idea also about the lacing chord , I'll check that out also .
Thanks for your help .

Hi,

make sure to add some more fabric to cut strips of 2-3cm from. These have been used to wrap the steel tubing so that the fabric can be sewn to it.

Achim

P.S. Why don´t you just ask your grandma for some old linen. These gentle old ladies often have some old mangling cloth what represents quite well what was used back then? Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the tips Achim . I'm not sure Grandma would be happy about me digging her up to ask her but I get your meaning . I was even toying with the idea to only cover the displayed side so I can still see the frame when I want to show how it was constructed . I guess I have time to think about such things for a while yet . Thanks again .

* *Phil, it is not 10 tpi (threads per inch) it is 50 to 55 tpi. *Ten threads per inch would not make loose woven muslin.
